When to Call a Professional vs DIY Appliance Repair

Here’s the honest line: some appliance repairs are safe to DIY and can save you money. Others are dangerous and will cost you thousands in water damage, electrical fire, or gas leaks if they go wrong.

After 15+ years repairing appliances in Brisbane, I’ve seen customers save themselves money on a simple filter replacement, and I’ve also seen what happens when someone tries to DIY a microwave capacitor replacement and gets a 2,400-volt shock. Let me break down what’s safe and what isn’t.

What You CAN Safely DIY

Cleaning dishwasher drain filter: The filter at the bottom of the tub gets blocked with food and debris. Unscrew it (hand-tight usually), pull it out, rinse it under running water, and screw it back in. 5 minutes. Zero risk.

Cleaning fridge condenser coils: The coils at the back of the fridge collect dust and reduce cooling efficiency. Unplug the fridge, use a soft brush or old toothbrush to gently clean the coils, and plug it back in. 15 minutes. Huge payoff — can improve fridge efficiency by 10–15%.

Replacing fridge door seals (gaskets): These peel off and press-fit back on. No tools needed. Most seals are designed to be customer-replaceable. Just make sure you buy the exact replacement for your model.

Emptying the dishwasher lint trap: Similar to the drain filter — pull out the trap, empty it, rinse it, put it back.

Replacing oven light globes: The globe is accessible and a simple push-twist replacement. Just make sure the oven is cool and unplugged first.

Cleaning rangehood grease filters: Soak them in hot soapy water or put them in the dishwasher. No risk, big improvement in airflow.

Checking if the power point is working: If an appliance isn’t turning on, test the power point with another device or a plug-in tester. If other devices work and the appliance doesn’t, it’s a fault with the appliance — call us.

These six things can genuinely save you money and take 10–30 minutes each. They’re maintenance, not repair. No risk of injury or water damage.

What You Should NEVER DIY

Anything involving gas (cooktops, gas ovens, gas dryers) — we don’t service gas appliances, but this is important safety advice regardless: Gas work requires a licensed gasfitter. If you disturb a gas connection or regulator without the proper training, you can create a gas leak that causes an explosion. This is non-negotiable. Even a professional electrician can’t do gas work legally in Queensland without a specific licence.

Anything involving refrigerant (fridge regas, heat pump repairs): If your fridge is low on refrigerant, it needs regassing. But handling refrigerant requires an ARCTick licence (Authorised Refrigerant Handler). It’s not just a training course — it’s legal. Venting old HFC refrigerants to the atmosphere is illegal and damages the ozone layer. We’re licensed; you shouldn’t attempt it.

Microwave internals: Modern microwaves contain a high-voltage capacitor that holds a lethal electrical charge even when unplugged. That charge can stay in the capacitor for hours or days. If you touch the wrong component, you could be fatally shocked. The capacitor isn’t obvious and the charge isn’t forgiving. Never open a microwave.

Hardwired ovens and cooktops: If an electric oven or cooktop is hardwired into the circuit (no plug), repairs involve 240V wiring and should only be done by a qualified professional. Oven element replacement, thermostat fixes — these aren’t jobs for YouTube tutorials. Get it wrong and you’re looking at a wiring fault or worse.

Washing machine drum and bearing replacement: Extracting the drum on a front-loader requires removing the tub, spider arms, and bearings. It’s a 2–3 hour job that needs the right tools, and one mistake can damage the housing. Even many appliance repair technicians outsource this one to specialists.

Refrigerator compressor work: Compressors are sealed units running at high pressure. Attempting to open one or work on the sealed system risks refrigerant leaks and potential pressure release injuries.

The Grey Area — Depends on Your Confidence Level

Replacing a dishwasher inlet valve: The valve is usually accessible, bolts on with two fasteners, and hose clamps connect the water line. If you’re comfortable with basic plumbing and can turn off the water supply first, you might manage this. But if you overtighten a hose clamp or cross-thread a bolt, you’ve created a new leak. Call us if you’re unsure.

Replacing a dryer belt: The belt is accessible under the front panel. You can unplug the dryer, remove a few screws, and slide the new belt on. Straightforward mechanically. The risk is breaking a clip when you reassemble it. If you’re handy, you could try it. If not, call us.

Replacing an oven element (if it’s plug-in type): Some ovens have elements that plug into a ceramic base — these are swappable. If your oven element is hardwired or brazed into the housing, it’s electrician work.

The pattern here: if it involves only mechanical assembly, simple fasteners, and no electrical or gas work, you might try it if you’re confident. But be honest about your skill level.

The Real Cost of Getting It Wrong

This is the big one. A cheap DIY fix that goes wrong can cost thousands:

  • Water damage: Tighten an inlet valve wrong, and you’ve got a slow leak under the dishwasher. Within a week, you’ve got rotting timber, black mould, and a major bathroom or kitchen rebuild bill.
  • Electrical damage: Cross a wire on an oven element, and you’ve got a house fire risk.
  • Gas leak: Loosen a gas coupling, and you’ve got a silent killer in your kitchen.

These aren’t exaggerations. I’ve seen customers pay these bills because they tried to save on a repair on a repair.

Our Approach to DIY Questions

If you call us and ask whether something is safe to DIY, we’ll be honest. If it’s genuinely safe and simple (like the filter cleaning), we’ll tell you. If it’s risky or requires a licence, we’ll tell you that too.

We’ve had customers call and say, “I replaced the fridge door seal myself, but it doesn’t seal tight. Can you help?” We’ll help. We’ve also had customers say, “I tried to replace the dishwasher inlet valve myself and flooded the kitchen.” That costs thousands.

Safety First, Always

Here’s the line I live by: if you’re in doubt, call a professional. Our standard callout charge — published in our Terms & Conditions — is far less than the cost of fixing something you broke trying to save money.

Appliance repair is not rocket science, but some parts of it are genuinely risky. Knowing the difference between a safe DIY job and a dangerous one is what prevents accidents.
