ASKO F1 Error Code — What It Means & How to Fix It

What Does the F1 Error Mean on an ASKO Dishwasher?

If your ASKO dishwasher is flashing an F1 error code, it means the machine has detected a water inlet fault. In plain terms, water is not reaching the dishwasher fast enough — or at all — to start a wash cycle.

The ASKO control board monitors how quickly the tub fills at the start of each cycle. If the water level does not reach the expected point within a set time (usually around 60 seconds), the board triggers F1 and stops the cycle. This is a protective measure — running the wash pump and heating element without enough water would damage internal components.

We see this error regularly on ASKO D-series models like the D5456, D5546, and the newer DBI-series (DBI654, DBI253). After 17 years repairing appliances across Brisbane, the F1 is one of the most common ASKO faults we deal with — and in many cases, it is something a homeowner can resolve without a technician.

Common Causes of the ASKO F1 Error

Blocked inlet filter screen. Every ASKO dishwasher has a small mesh filter where the inlet hose connects to the machine (typically at the rear, bottom-right corner). This screen catches sediment, grit, and mineral deposits from your water supply. Brisbane’s water, while generally good, carries enough particulate matter to gradually clog this filter over two to three years. When it blocks, water flow drops below the threshold the control board expects, and F1 appears.

Kinked or crushed inlet hose. The braided stainless steel inlet hose runs from the isolation tap under the sink to the dishwasher. If the machine has been pushed back too far into the cavity, or if cabinetry has shifted, the hose can kink. Even a partial restriction reduces flow enough to trigger the error. We see this frequently after kitchen renovations in Brisbane homes where the dishwasher gets repositioned.

Faulty solenoid inlet valve. The inlet valve is an electrically operated component (part number 8801344 on many ASKO models) that opens when the control board sends a signal at the start of a cycle. Over time, the solenoid coil can fail, or mineral scale can seize the valve mechanism. When this happens, the valve either does not open at all or opens too slowly. This is the most common cause when the filter and hose are both clear.

Low household water pressure. ASKO dishwashers require a minimum water pressure of approximately 0.5 bar (50 kPa) to fill correctly. If your home’s water pressure is below this — which can happen with older plumbing, pressure-limiting valves, or during periods of high demand in your area — the fill time exceeds the control board’s limit. You can check this by running your kitchen cold tap; if the flow is noticeably weak, pressure may be the issue.

Isolation tap not fully open. It sounds obvious, but this accounts for roughly one in five F1 callouts we attend. The quarter-turn isolation valve under the sink may have been bumped or partially closed during cleaning. Always check this first.

DIY Troubleshooting Steps

Before calling a technician, work through these checks in order. You do not need any special tools — a spanner and a small bucket are all that is required.

  1. Check the isolation tap. Look under your kitchen sink for the small valve on the cold water line feeding the dishwasher. Turn it fully anticlockwise (open). If it was partially closed, this alone may fix the problem.
  2. Inspect the inlet hose. Pull the dishwasher forward slightly (disconnect power first). Trace the braided inlet hose from the tap connection to where it enters the rear of the machine. Look for kinks, tight bends, or crushed sections. The hose should follow a gentle curve with no sharp angles. If you find a kink, straighten it and push the machine back carefully to avoid re-kinking.
  3. Clean the inlet filter screen. With the tap turned off and a towel underneath, unscrew the inlet hose where it connects to the dishwasher. Behind the brass fitting, you will find a small mesh disc — this is the inlet filter. If it is discoloured or visibly blocked with sediment, soak it in white vinegar for 30 minutes, then scrub gently with a toothbrush. Rinse under running water and refit. Tighten the hose connection firmly but do not overtighten.
  4. Check your water pressure. Run the cold kitchen tap fully open. If the flow is noticeably weak compared to normal, your home may have a pressure issue. Check other taps in the house. If pressure is low everywhere, contact Urban Utilities (Brisbane’s water provider) to check for supply issues in your area.
  5. Run a test cycle. Reconnect power, turn the tap back on, close the door, and select a short rinse or quick wash cycle. Listen carefully — you should hear water entering the tub within 30 seconds. If the machine fills and the cycle starts, the issue is resolved. If F1 returns, the inlet valve most likely needs replacement.

When to Call a Professional

If you have confirmed that the tap is fully open, the hose is not kinked, the inlet filter is clean, and your water pressure is normal — but the F1 error still appears — the inlet solenoid valve has almost certainly failed. This is an internal component that requires disassembly of the dishwasher to access and replace.

You should also call a technician if you notice any water leaking from the inlet connection, if the hose itself is cracked or perished, or if the error appears intermittently (which can indicate a valve that is sticking rather than completely failed).

What the Repair Typically Involves

When we attend an ASKO F1 fault, we start with a full diagnostic. We test the inlet valve’s solenoid coil with a multimeter to confirm whether it is receiving the correct voltage and drawing the right current. If the coil reads open-circuit, the valve is dead and needs replacing.

On most ASKO models, replacing the inlet valve takes 30 to 45 minutes. Our technicians carry a range of commonly used parts on every van. Where the right part is on hand, many repairs are completed in a single visit, subject to parts availability. $219 includes a callout and up to 30 minutes labour onsite — most faults are diagnosed and many repaired in that time. 12-month warranty on all parts supplied and installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the ASKO F1 error dangerous?

No. The F1 error simply means your dishwasher cannot get enough water to run. There is no risk of flooding, electrical hazard, or damage to your home from this error code. The machine will remain stopped until the issue is fixed.

Can I still use my ASKO dishwasher with the F1 error?

No — the dishwasher will not start any cycle while the F1 code is active. You will need to resolve the water supply issue before the machine will operate again. In the meantime, you can hand-wash dishes normally.

How long does the repair take?

Most F1 repairs are completed in a single visit, subject to parts availability, typically within 30 to 60 minutes. If the inlet valve needs replacing where the right part is on hand, the repair is completed on the spot. If a specific part is needed, we provide a fixed quote before ordering.

Will fixing the F1 error void my ASKO warranty?

Not when repaired by an authorised ASKO service agent like Always Prompt Repairs. We use genuine ASKO parts and our work is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty terms. DIY repairs using non-genuine parts may affect your warranty — if in doubt, call us first.
