What Does the E04 Error Mean on a Bosch Washing Machine?
The Bosch E04 error code indicates a problem with the water flow sensor — specifically, the machine has detected that water is not draining as expected, or the flow sensor is reading an abnormal signal. In everyday terms, your Bosch washer either cannot pump water out properly or the sensor that monitors water movement has developed a fault.
Bosch uses the Aqua Sensor and flow sensor system across its Series 4, Series 6, and Series 8 washing machines (including popular models like the WAW28460AU, WAN24120AU, and WAX32K40AU). When the control module detects that water is still present in the drum after the drain pump has been running for a set time, it triggers E04 and halts the cycle to prevent overflow or pump damage.
We see this error frequently on Bosch front-loaders that are three to seven years old — it is one of the top five Bosch fault codes we attend across Brisbane.
Common Causes of the Bosch E04 Error
Blocked drain pump filter. This is the single most common cause. The drain filter (located behind the small access flap at the bottom-front of the machine) catches coins, hair clips, buttons, tissue fragments, and lint before they reach the drain pump. Over time, this filter accumulates enough debris to restrict water flow. Brisbane households with pets often see faster buildup due to animal hair in laundry loads.
Kinked or blocked drain hose. The corrugated drain hose exits the rear of the machine and connects to either a standpipe in the wall or a sink spigot. If this hose is kinked, crushed behind the machine, or internally blocked with lint and soap residue, water cannot exit the drum. We frequently find drain hose issues after Brisbane homeowners rearrange their laundry or push the machine back too firmly against the wall.
Blocked standpipe or plumbing. If the drain hose connects to a standpipe (a vertical pipe in the wall), the pipe itself may be partially blocked. Soap scum, grease, and lint accumulate inside standpipes over the years. When the washing machine pumps water out at high volume, a partially blocked standpipe cannot handle the flow, causing water to back up and trigger E04.
Faulty drain pump. The drain pump (part number 00145787 on many Bosch models) is a small motor-driven impeller that pushes water out of the drum through the drain hose. After years of use, the pump motor can burn out, the impeller can crack or jam, or the pump housing can develop a leak. When the pump cannot move water fast enough, E04 appears.
Flow sensor malfunction. The Aqua Sensor or flow sensor monitors water movement inside the machine. If this sensor fails electronically — giving false readings to the control board — the machine may trigger E04 even when drainage is functioning normally. This is less common but does occur, particularly on machines over five years old.
DIY Troubleshooting Steps
Before calling a technician, try these steps in order. You will need towels, a shallow container (like a baking tray), and possibly a pair of pliers.
- Drain any standing water. If the drum is full of water, you need to drain it first. Open the small access flap at the bottom-front of the machine. Inside you will find the drain filter cap and a small emergency drain hose (a thin rubber tube). Pull the emergency drain hose out, place the end in a shallow container, and remove the plug. Let the water drain slowly — you may need to empty the container several times.
- Clean the drain pump filter. Once the water has drained, place towels under the filter area. Slowly turn the drain filter cap anticlockwise and pull it out. Remove any debris — coins, hair clips, lint clumps, and small items that have escaped from pockets are common finds. Clean the filter under running water, and check inside the filter housing for anything stuck around the pump impeller. You should be able to see the impeller blades — spin them with your finger to confirm they turn freely.
- Check the drain hose. Pull the machine forward carefully and inspect the drain hose from where it exits the machine to where it connects to the plumbing. Look for kinks, tight bends, or crushed sections. If the hose connects to a standpipe, pull the hose out and pour a bucket of water down the standpipe to confirm it drains freely. If the water backs up, the standpipe itself is blocked and needs clearing.
- Flush the drain hose. If you suspect a blockage inside the hose, disconnect it from the standpipe or sink spigot and run water through it from both ends. If water does not flow freely, the hose needs clearing or replacing.
- Reset and test. Refit the drain filter (turn clockwise until snug), reconnect the drain hose, and push the machine back into position. Turn it off at the wall for two minutes, then turn it back on. Select a Spin & Drain cycle — this runs the drain pump without filling the machine. If the cycle completes without error, the blockage has been cleared.
When to Call a Professional
If you have cleaned the filter, confirmed the drain hose and standpipe are clear, and the E04 error still appears, the drain pump itself has likely failed. You should also call a technician if the pump makes unusual grinding or humming noises (indicating a jammed or failing impeller), if you notice water leaking from underneath the machine, or if the error appears intermittently — which often signals a flow sensor fault rather than a physical blockage.
Do not continue running wash cycles with E04 showing. Standing water left in the drum promotes mould growth and can begin to smell within 24 to 48 hours, particularly in Brisbane’s humid subtropical climate.
What the Repair Typically Involves
When we attend a Bosch E04 fault, we run a full diagnostic. We test the drain pump motor’s continuity and current draw, check the flow sensor readings via the Bosch diagnostic mode, and inspect the entire drain path from sump to standpipe.
If the drain pump has failed, we replace it — this involves removing the front lower panel, disconnecting the pump from the sump hose, and fitting a new unit. The job typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. If the flow sensor is faulty, we replace that component instead.
$219 includes a callout and up to 30 minutes labour onsite — most faults are diagnosed and many repaired in that time. 12-month warranty on all parts supplied and installed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Bosch E04 error dangerous?
The E04 error itself is not dangerous, but you should not ignore it. Your washing machine has stopped because it cannot drain water properly. Leaving standing water in the drum for extended periods can cause mould growth and unpleasant odours — something that happens quickly in Brisbane’s warm, humid climate.
Can I open the door with E04 showing?
Not immediately. Bosch front-loaders lock the door when water is detected in the drum as a flood-prevention measure. You will need to drain the water first using the emergency drain hose (the small tube next to the drain filter behind the access flap) or by carefully lowering the main drain hose below drum level into a bucket. Once the water level drops, the door lock will release.
How long does a Bosch E04 repair take?
Most E04 repairs are completed in a single visit, subject to parts availability within 45 to 60 minutes. If the drain pump needs replacing, our technicians carry a range of commonly used parts on every van. Where the right part is on hand, the repair can often be completed the same day. If a specific part is needed, we provide a fixed quote before ordering.
Will the repair void my Bosch warranty?
Not when performed by an authorised Bosch service agent. Always Prompt Repairs is authorised by BSH (the parent company of Bosch, Siemens, and Neff), so all repairs we carry out are covered under the manufacturer’s warranty terms.
