Is your fridge buzzing, clicking, rattling, or humming louder than usual? A noisy fridge isn’t just annoying — it’s often a warning sign that something is wearing out or failing. Some fridge noises are completely normal, but others point to faults that will get worse (and more expensive) if you ignore them. Before you call a technician, here are a few things you can check yourself. And if the noise persists, Always Prompt Repairs can diagnose it fast. Book your fridge repair online or call (07) 3062 2377.

DIY Checks Before You Call a Technician

Step 1: Check the Fridge Is Level

An unlevel fridge can vibrate against the floor, producing a buzzing or rattling noise — especially on hard tiles or floorboards. Use a spirit level on top of the fridge and adjust the front legs until it’s sitting flat. Most fridges have adjustable screw-in feet at the front. The fridge should be very slightly tilted backward so the doors close on their own.

Step 2: Check Nothing Is Touching the Back or Sides

Pull the fridge away from the wall slightly. If the condenser coils, water lines, or the body of the fridge are touching the wall, cabinetry, or nearby items, you’ll hear vibration noises — especially when the compressor kicks in. Leave at least 50mm of clearance on all sides for airflow and to prevent contact vibration.

Step 3: Check the Drip Tray

Most fridges have a drip tray (also called an evaporation tray) underneath at the back. This tray catches condensation from the defrost cycle. If it’s loose, cracked, or sitting at an angle, it can rattle when the compressor runs. Pull it out, clean it, and make sure it’s seated properly when you slide it back in.

Common Fridge Noises and What They Mean

Buzzing

A loud or persistent buzzing often comes from the compressor start relay. The start relay helps the compressor motor kick into action. When it starts to fail, you’ll hear a buzzing or clicking sound as the compressor tries — and fails — to start. If the buzzing is accompanied by the fridge not cooling properly, the relay likely needs replacing.

Clicking

Repeated clicking sounds — especially a pattern of click-buzz-click — usually indicate the compressor start relay is failing. The relay tries to start the compressor, fails, clicks off, waits, and tries again. This is one of the most common fridge faults and is relatively inexpensive to repair. Left unaddressed, it can eventually damage the compressor itself.

Rattling

Rattling noises are often mechanical — something is loose and vibrating. Common causes include a loose drain pan underneath the fridge, a rattling condenser fan blade (usually at the back near the bottom), or loose mounting hardware. Rattling that only happens when the compressor is running points to the condenser fan or compressor mounting brackets.

Humming

All fridges hum — that’s the compressor running. But if the humming has become noticeably louder or more constant, it can mean the compressor is working harder than normal. This can be caused by dirty condenser coils (reducing heat dissipation), a failing compressor, or a refrigerant issue. Increased humming combined with the fridge not holding temperature is a sign to call a technician sooner rather than later.

Grinding

A grinding or scraping noise from inside the fridge (often from the freezer compartment) usually means the evaporator fan is hitting ice buildup. The evaporator fan circulates cold air through the fridge and freezer. If the defrost system isn’t working properly, ice forms around the fan and the blades start scraping against it. This fault needs professional attention — the fan motor, defrost heater, or defrost thermostat may need replacing.

When to Call a Professional

If your DIY checks haven’t quietened the noise, or if the noise is accompanied by temperature problems, it’s time for a professional diagnosis. Compressor, fan motor, and defrost system faults all require qualified hands. We work on all major fridge brands including Westinghouse, Fisher & Paykel, LG, Samsung, Bosch, Miele, Liebherr, Electrolux, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for a fridge to make noise?

Yes — some noise is completely normal. You’ll hear the compressor humming, the defrost heater ticking, water dripping into the drain pan, and ice dropping in the ice maker. What’s not normal is a sudden change in noise level, new clicking or buzzing patterns, or grinding sounds from inside the fridge.

Why does my fridge click on and off repeatedly?

Repeated clicking usually means the compressor start relay is failing. The compressor tries to start, fails, and the relay clicks off before trying again. This cycle will repeat continuously and the fridge may stop cooling. It’s a common and usually affordable repair.

Can a noisy fridge be dangerous?

A noisy fridge isn’t typically dangerous in itself, but some faults can become safety issues if left unaddressed. A grinding evaporator fan can cause ice buildup that blocks airflow and overworks the compressor. Excessive vibration can damage water lines. And a failing compressor can overheat. It’s best to get unusual noises diagnosed promptly.

How much does it cost to fix a noisy fridge?

It depends on the fault. A start relay replacement is one of the more affordable fridge repairs. A condenser fan motor or evaporator fan motor is moderately priced. Compressor replacement is more expensive and your technician will advise whether it’s cost-effective for your fridge’s age. Our call-out fee of $219 covers diagnosis and the first 30 minutes of labour.

How Much Does It Cost?

Our standard call-out fee is $219, which includes the first 30 minutes of on-site labour and a full diagnostic assessment. If additional time is needed, it’s $45 per 15 minutes thereafter. Parts are quoted separately at the time of repair. We offer a $20 discount for seniors, pensioners, and students. All prices are estimates only — your technician will confirm the final cost before proceeding with any work.

Do You Carry Parts on Your Vans?

Our vans carry a range of common parts and components. For less common or brand-specific parts, we can usually source and fit them within a few business days. Your technician will let you know at the time of diagnosis whether the part is on hand or needs to be ordered.
