Finding water on the floor under or around your fridge? A leaking refrigerator isn’t just messy — standing water can damage flooring, cause mould, and in some cases indicate a more serious cooling problem. Our Brisbane technicians diagnose and fix fridge leaks on-site across Brisbane, Ipswich, and the Gold Coast.
Get it sorted before the damage spreads. Book online now or call (07) 3062 2377 — we service all major fridge brands.
Why Is My Fridge Leaking Water?
Refrigerators produce condensation and defrost water as part of normal operation — this water is designed to drain into a pan underneath where it evaporates. When this system fails, water ends up on your kitchen floor instead. The cause is usually a blocked drain, a cracked component, or a plumbing connection issue.
Quick DIY Checks Before You Call
Try these safe checks before booking a repair:
- Check the drain pan — Most fridges have a removable drain pan (evaporator tray) underneath at the front or rear. Pull it out carefully — if it’s overflowing, the fridge may be producing excess condensation due to a door seal issue or the pan may be cracked.
- Check water filter connections — If your fridge has a water dispenser or ice maker with a replaceable filter, check that the filter is seated correctly and the connections aren’t weeping. A poorly installed filter is a common source of slow leaks.
- Defrost the freezer — If you notice ice buildup on the back wall of the freezer or the freezer isn’t cooling properly, the defrost drain may be frozen over. Turn the fridge off for 24 hours to fully defrost, then restart. If the leak stops, the defrost drain was likely blocked with ice.
- Check the door seals — Worn door seals allow warm, humid air into the fridge, creating excess condensation. Run your hand around the door seal while closed — if you feel cold air escaping, the seal needs replacing.
Common Causes We Repair
If your DIY checks don’t resolve the leak, these are the faults we find most often:
Blocked Defrost Drain
This is the most common cause of fridge leaks. During the defrost cycle, ice on the evaporator coils melts and drains through a small channel into the drain pan below. When this drain gets clogged with food debris, ice, or mineral buildup, the water backs up and overflows — usually pooling at the bottom of the fridge compartment or leaking onto the floor. Our technicians clear the blockage and ensure proper drainage.
Cracked Drain Pan
The drain pan (evaporator tray) sits under the fridge and collects defrost water, which normally evaporates from the heat of the compressor. If the pan is cracked or has shifted out of position, water drips straight onto the floor. We replace drain pans and reposition them correctly.
Failed Water Inlet Valve
Fridges with water dispensers and ice makers have a water inlet valve at the rear that controls mains water supply. When this valve fails or its connections deteriorate, you’ll find water pooling behind or under the fridge — often a slow, persistent leak. Valve replacement stops the leak and restores proper water flow to the dispenser and ice maker.
Ice Maker Line Leak
The water supply line to the ice maker can develop leaks at connection points or from the line itself perishing over time. These leaks often go unnoticed because they’re at the back of the fridge. If you find water behind the fridge or notice reduced ice production, the supply line may need replacing.
Brands We Service
We repair fridges from all major manufacturers including Samsung, LG, Fisher & Paykel, Westinghouse, Electrolux, Bosch, Miele, Liebherr, Hisense, and Haier. As authorised warranty agents for Miele, Bosch, and Liebherr, we carry genuine parts and have direct manufacturer technical support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is water under my fridge an emergency?
While not an immediate emergency, a fridge leak should be addressed promptly. Standing water can damage hardwood or laminate flooring within days, and the moisture promotes mould growth in cabinetry. If the leak is severe, place towels down and book a repair as soon as possible.
Why is there water inside my fridge at the bottom?
Water pooling inside the fridge compartment (usually in the crisper drawer area) almost always indicates a blocked defrost drain. The water that should drain to the pan underneath is backing up into the fridge cavity instead. This is a very common and straightforward repair.
Can a leaking fridge damage my food?
A blocked defrost drain can cause ice to build up on the evaporator, reducing cooling efficiency. You might notice the fridge isn’t as cold as usual or the freezer is icing up. In this case, food safety could be affected if temperatures rise above safe levels. Check your fridge thermometer — it should be between 2°C and 4°C.
My fridge only leaks sometimes — why?
Intermittent leaks are common with defrost drain issues. The fridge only defrosts periodically (every 8–12 hours typically), so the leak appears after each defrost cycle. In humid weather, the drain pan may also overflow because evaporation can’t keep up with the increased condensation.
