Common Samsung Dishwasher Faults We Repair
Samsung dishwashers use error codes to indicate specific faults. Here are the most common problems we diagnose and repair.
5E Error — Drain Fault
The 5E (sometimes displayed as SE) error code means the dishwasher can’t drain water. This is the most common Samsung dishwasher fault we see. Start by checking and cleaning the drain filter at the bottom of the tub — it catches food scraps and debris that block water flow. If the filter is clear, the issue may be a failed drain pump, a blocked drain hose, or a kinked hose behind the machine. The drain pump motor wears over time and is a common replacement part on Samsung dishwashers.
4E Error — Water Supply Fault
A 4E error indicates the dishwasher isn’t receiving enough water. First, check that the water supply tap is fully open — it’s behind or beside the dishwasher, usually under the sink. If the tap is open, the problem may be a blocked inlet hose filter (sediment builds up over time), a failed water inlet valve (solenoid), or a faulty water level sensor. The inlet hose filter is worth checking before booking a repair — disconnect the hose from the tap end and clean the mesh screen.
HE or HE1 Error — Heater Fault
The HE error code indicates a heating element or temperature sensor problem. The dishwasher can’t heat the water to the required temperature, which means dishes won’t be cleaned or sanitised properly. Common causes include a burned-out heating element, a failed temperature sensor (thermistor) sending incorrect readings to the control board, or a wiring fault between these components. Dishes coming out greasy or with food residue — even on hot wash cycles — often points to a heater issue.
LC or LE Error — Leak Detection
Samsung dishwashers have a leak sensor in the base pan. When water is detected, the machine displays an LC or LE error and stops the cycle to prevent water damage to your flooring. Common leak sources include a damaged door seal, a cracked sump assembly, loose internal hose clamps, or a leaking inlet valve. The machine needs to be pulled forward and inspected from underneath to find the source. Sometimes the sensor itself is triggered by condensation rather than a real leak — but this still needs professional assessment to confirm.
Not Cleaning Dishes Properly
If your Samsung dishwasher completes the cycle but dishes are still dirty, there are several possible causes: blocked spray arm nozzles (calcium or food debris), low water pressure from a partially failed inlet valve, a worn wash pump motor not generating enough force, or the heating element not bringing water to the right temperature. Check the spray arms first — remove them and rinse under running water, clearing any blocked nozzles with a toothpick.
Noisy Operation
Grinding, rattling, or buzzing sounds during a cycle can indicate a worn wash pump bearing, debris caught in the drain pump impeller, loose spray arms hitting dishes, or a failing drain pump motor. A sudden loud grinding noise that wasn’t there before usually means something has fallen through the filter basket into the pump area — broken glass is a common culprit.
