Fridge Freezing Food? Temperature Repairs Brisbane

Is your fridge freezing food when it shouldn’t be? Finding frozen lettuce, icy milk, or crystallised fruit in the fresh food compartment is a clear sign something has gone wrong with your fridge’s temperature regulation. A fridge freezing food wastes groceries and means your refrigerator isn’t operating correctly — and it usually gets worse over time.

Why Is Your Fridge Freezing Food? DIY Checks

Before booking a repair, check these common causes that you can fix yourself:

1. Check the Thermostat Setting

The ideal fridge temperature is between 3°C and 5°C. If someone has bumped the dial or digital setting to a colder position, your fridge will over-cool. Check your temperature setting — on a numbered dial, 1 is warmest and 5 is coldest (this confuses many people). On digital models, aim for 4°C. Give the fridge 24 hours after adjustment before assessing results.

2. Check Air Vents Aren’t Blocked

Cold air enters the fresh food compartment through vents (usually at the back wall or top of the fridge). If food items are pushed directly against these vents, the cold air hits them first at near-freezing temperatures before distributing evenly. Rearrange items so nothing touches or blocks the air vent openings. Leave at least 2cm clearance around vents for proper air circulation.

Professional Fridge Freezing Food Repairs

If adjusting the thermostat and clearing vents doesn’t resolve the freezing, you likely have a faulty temperature control component. These are the most common professional repairs we perform:

Thermostat Fault

The mechanical or electronic thermostat tells the compressor when to run and when to stop cooling. A thermostat stuck in the “on” position keeps the compressor running continuously, driving temperatures well below the set point. Mechanical thermostats use a gas-filled capillary tube — when this leaks, the thermostat defaults to maximum cooling. We test thermostats with calibrated instruments and replace them during the same visit.

Temperature Sensor Failure

Modern fridges use electronic temperature sensors (thermistors) that report temperature data to the main control board. When a sensor fails or gives inaccurate readings, the board may “think” the fridge is warmer than it actually is and run the compressor excessively. Sensor replacement is straightforward — the key is correctly diagnosing which sensor has failed in multi-sensor systems common in larger fridges.

Damper Control Malfunction

Many frost-free fridges use a damper (air baffle) between the freezer and fridge compartments to regulate cold airflow. When the damper gets stuck in the open position — due to ice buildup, a failed motor, or broken linkage — too much freezer air enters the fresh food section. This is particularly common in Samsung and LG models and causes uneven freezing, usually worst near the top of the fridge compartment.

Control Board Issue

The main electronic control board processes sensor data and controls the compressor, damper, and fan motors. A partially failed board can misinterpret temperature readings or fail to close the damper when the set temperature is reached. Control board diagnosis requires specialised equipment — our technicians determine whether board repair or replacement is the better option for your specific fridge model and situation.
