Burnt-Out Heating Element

On solid hotplate cooktops, the coil element itself can burn through after years of thermal cycling. You may see a visible break or dark spot in the coil. On ceramic glass cooktops, the ribbon element beneath the glass can crack or develop a hot spot that eventually fails. Induction cooktops don’t have traditional heating elements — the coil generates a magnetic field — but the induction coil can still fail. Faulty Element Switch or Infinite Control

Each cooktop zone has its own switch (often called an infinite control or simmerstat) that regulates the power level.
