Cooktop Element Not Working? Brisbane Repairs

Cooktop Element Not Working? Fast Electric Cooktop Repairs in Brisbane

When one or more elements on your electric cooktop stop heating, meal prep grinds to a halt. Whether you have a solid hotplate cooktop, a ceramic glass cooktop, or an induction cooktop, a single zone failure is one of the most common faults we see — and it’s almost always repairable on-site. If your cooktop element is not working, book a repair online with Always Prompt Repairs and we’ll send a qualified technician to your Brisbane home to diagnose and fix the problem.

Common Causes of a Cooktop Element Not Working

A single zone failure — where one element stops heating while the rest still work — usually points to a localised component fault rather than a whole-appliance issue. Here’s what our technicians find most often:

Burnt-Out Heating Element

On solid hotplate cooktops, the coil element itself can burn through after years of thermal cycling. You may see a visible break or dark spot in the coil. On ceramic glass cooktops, the ribbon element beneath the glass can crack or develop a hot spot that eventually fails. Induction cooktops don’t have traditional heating elements — the coil generates a magnetic field — but the induction coil can still fail. Element replacement is the most common cooktop repair we perform.

Faulty Element Switch or Infinite Control

Each cooktop zone has its own switch (often called an infinite control or simmerstat) that regulates the power level. These switches contain internal contacts that wear over time, particularly on frequently used zones. When the switch fails, the element receives no power regardless of the dial position. Switch replacement is straightforward and our technicians carry commonly used parts for popular cooktop brands.

Loose or Burnt Terminal Connection

The high-current connections behind each element can loosen over time due to thermal expansion and contraction. A loose terminal creates resistance, which generates heat at the connection point rather than at the element. Left unchecked, this melts the terminal block and can damage the wiring. Our technicians inspect all terminal connections during a cooktop repair and replace any damaged components to prevent recurrence.

Failed Element Receptacle (Plug-In Hotplates)

Older cooktops with plug-in solid hotplates use a receptacle (socket) that the element plugs into. The receptacle contacts can corrode, burn, or lose spring tension, resulting in an intermittent or complete loss of connection. You might notice the element working sometimes but not others, or sparking when the element is pushed into position. Receptacle replacement is a quick repair that restores reliable connection.

Induction Cooktop Specific Faults

If your induction cooktop zone isn’t working, the issue may be the induction coil, the power electronics (IGBT module) for that zone, or a faulty sensor. Induction cooktops also require compatible cookware — a zone won’t activate if it doesn’t detect a ferromagnetic pot or pan. Our technicians test with known-compatible cookware during diagnosis to rule out this possibility first.

Please note: Always Prompt Repairs services electric cooktops only, including ceramic, solid hotplate, and induction models. We do not repair gas cooktops or gas appliances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is one element on my cooktop not working?

A single zone failure on an electric cooktop is usually caused by a burnt-out element, a faulty element switch or infinite control, a loose terminal connection, or a failed element receptacle. Ceramic cooktops may also have a cracked element ribbon beneath the glass.

Can I replace a cooktop element myself?

Cooktop elements operate on 240V mains power and must be replaced by a licensed technician for safety and compliance reasons. DIY electrical work on fixed appliances is illegal in Queensland.
