Why Won’t Your Bosch Dishwasher Drain?
You open the dishwasher door expecting clean, dry dishes and find a pool of dirty water sitting at the bottom of the tub. A Bosch dishwasher that will not drain is one of the most common faults we repair across Brisbane — and Bosch is one of the most popular dishwasher brands in Australian kitchens, so we see this frequently.
Bosch dishwashers display specific error codes for drainage faults: E24 (general drain fault), E25 (drain pump cover issue), and E22 (blocked filter). If your Bosch is showing any of these codes, or if you simply find standing water after a cycle, the cause is almost always in the drain path — and the majority of cases are resolved by cleaning components you can access without tools.
Bosch builds their dishwashers with a multi-stage filtration system specifically designed for easy user maintenance. The drain filter, drain pump cover, and drain hose connection are all intended to be checked and cleaned regularly. Understanding this system means you can resolve most drain faults yourself in 20 to 30 minutes.
Common Causes
Blocked drain filter. This is the cause in the vast majority of Bosch drainage faults. The drain filter sits at the base of the dishwasher tub and consists of a cylindrical mesh filter and a flat mesh screen. Together, they trap food particles, labels from jars, broken glass, and other debris before it reaches the drain pump. When the filter becomes clogged, water cannot flow from the tub to the pump. Many Brisbane households run their Bosch dishwasher daily without rinsing plates — the dishwasher handles the cleaning, but the filter accumulates debris faster and needs more frequent maintenance.
Jammed drain pump impeller. Below the filter assembly, the drain pump uses a small impeller to push water through the drain hose. Hard, small items — glass fragments from a chipped wine glass, olive pits, toothpick fragments, small bones — can fall past the filter and jam the impeller. The pump motor hums (trying to spin) but no water moves. On some Bosch models, the pump cover can be carefully removed to access and clear the impeller.
Kinked drain hose. The drain hose runs from the pump at the base of the dishwasher through the cabinet side panel to a connection under the kitchen sink. In the tight space behind and beside the dishwasher, this hose can kink — particularly when the dishwasher is pushed back after filter cleaning or maintenance. Even a partial kink restricts flow enough to cause incomplete drainage.
Blocked sink connection. Where the drain hose connects under the sink — usually to a spigot on the sink trap or waste disposal — grease, soap scum, and food debris accumulate over time. This is especially common in Brisbane homes where cooking oils are washed down the sink, as they solidify in cooler drain pipes. If the dishwasher connects to a waste disposal unit, check that the knockout plug inside the spigot was removed during installation — a surprisingly common oversight.
Drain pump failure. After years of continuous use, the drain pump motor can fail — a burnt winding, seized bearing, or failed capacitor. When the pump motor fails, it is completely silent during the drain phase. This is distinct from a jammed impeller (motor hums but no flow) and requires pump replacement.
High-loop installation issue. Bosch requires the drain hose to rise to countertop height before descending to the sink connection (a “high loop”). Without this loop, dirty water can siphon back from the sink into the dishwasher, preventing complete drainage and potentially causing odour issues. Improperly installed dishwashers — common in rental properties and DIY kitchen renovations — frequently lack this high loop.
Drain pump cover not seated. The drain pump cover (beneath the filter assembly) must be correctly positioned for the pump to function. If the cover was dislodged during filter cleaning or by a foreign object, it can block the pump inlet. This specifically triggers the E25 error code on Bosch models.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Remove standing water. Open the dishwasher and remove the bottom rack. Use a large sponge, towels, or a wet-dry vacuum to soak up standing water from the tub. This gives you clear access to the filter and prevents overflow when you remove the filter.
- Clean the filter assembly. At the base of the tub, locate the cylindrical filter — turn it anticlockwise and lift it out. Remove the flat mesh screen beneath it. Wash all components under running water with dish soap, using a soft brush to clear stubborn debris. Inspect the sump (the cavity below where the filter sits) and remove any debris you find.
- Check the pump impeller. Look into the sump area. On many Bosch models, you will see a small cover over the drain pump. This can often be gently pried off. Check that the impeller rotates freely — spin it with your finger. If something is jamming it, carefully remove the obstruction. Watch for glass fragments.
- Reassemble and test. Refit the flat screen and cylindrical filter (turn clockwise until it locks). Run a short rinse cycle. Listen for the drain pump activating and confirm that water drains completely at the end of the cycle.
- If still blocked, check the hose. Carefully pull the dishwasher forward. Locate the drain hose and check for kinks along its length. If possible, disconnect the hose from the sink connection and flush water through it from both ends to check for internal blockages.
- Check the sink connection. Under the sink, ensure the connection point is clear. If the dishwasher connects to a waste disposal unit, run the disposal to clear any accumulated debris from the spigot.
When to Call a Professional
Call a technician if the drain pump is completely silent during the drain phase (pump motor failure), if you have cleaned the filter and cleared the hose but water still does not drain (possible pump failure or control board issue), if you see water leaking from beneath the dishwasher (indicates a leak that triggered the flood switch), or if the E15 error code appears (water detected in the base pan).
What the Repair Typically Involves
We systematically check the entire drain path — filter, sump, pump impeller, hose, and sink connection. If the drain pump has failed, we replace the complete assembly, which on most Bosch models is accessed by laying the dishwasher on its side or back. We carry drain pumps for popular Bosch series on our vans. We are authorised Bosch warranty agents in Brisbane.
Our standard callout is $219, which includes the first 30 minutes of labour. Additional time is $45 per 15-minute block. Seniors, pensioners, and students receive a $20 discount. All parts carry a 12-month warranty. All prices are estimates only.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my Bosch dishwasher drain?
The most common cause is a blocked drain filter. Remove and clean the cylindrical filter and flat mesh screen at the base of the tub. Also check the drain pump impeller for jammed debris and the drain hose for kinks. This resolves the majority of Bosch drainage faults.
What Bosch error codes indicate a drain problem?
E24 is the main drainage error. E25 indicates the pump cover is displaced. E22 points to a blocked filter. All three share similar troubleshooting — start by cleaning the filter and checking the pump impeller.
How often should I clean my Bosch dishwasher filter?
At least monthly. If you run the dishwasher daily without pre-rinsing, weekly cleaning prevents buildup. It takes under two minutes and prevents the vast majority of drainage issues.
How much does a Bosch dishwasher drain repair cost?
Our callout is $219 including the first 30 minutes of labour. Drain pump parts cost $150 to $280. Many drain issues are resolved by cleaning the filter — no parts cost. Seniors, pensioners, and students receive a $20 discount. All prices are estimates only.
