Fridge Door Not Sealing — Causes and Repairs

Fridge door not sealing properly? If you can feel cold air escaping around the edges, see condensation forming on the outside of the door, or notice your fridge running constantly to compensate, you likely have a worn or damaged door seal. This is one of the most common fridge problems we see — and one of the most cost-effective to fix.

How to Tell if Your Fridge Door Seal Is Failing

A failing door seal does not always look obviously damaged. Here are the signs to watch for.

The Dollar Note Test

Close the fridge door on a dollar note so it hangs half in, half out. Try to pull the note out. If it slides out with little or no resistance, the seal is not gripping properly in that spot. Repeat this test at several points around the door — seals often fail in one section before the rest.

Condensation on the Outside

If you notice moisture or water droplets forming on the outside surface of the fridge door or around the door frame, warm air is getting in and condensing on the cold surface. This is a strong indicator of a seal gap.

Fridge Running Constantly

When the seal leaks, warm air enters the fridge continuously. The compressor has to work overtime to maintain temperature, so you will hear it running far more than usual. This drives up your electricity bill and puts extra wear on the compressor — which is a far more expensive repair down the track.

Ice Build-Up in the Freezer

A leaking freezer door seal lets in humid air, which freezes and builds up as frost or ice on the back wall and around the door frame. If you are defrosting your freezer more often than usual, a failing seal is a likely cause.

Visible Damage to the Seal

Look closely at the rubber gasket around the door. Cracks, tears, hardened sections, warping, or areas where the seal has pulled away from the door indicate it needs replacing.

Quick Fixes You Can Try Yourself

Clean the Seal

Dirt, grease, and food residue on the seal surface prevent it from making good contact with the fridge body. Wipe the entire seal with warm water and a mild detergent, then dry it thoroughly. Pay attention to the folds — grime tends to build up inside the grooves. This alone can restore a seal that appeared to be failing.

Reshape a Warped Seal

If the seal has warped slightly from age or heat exposure, you can sometimes reshape it. Use a hair dryer on low heat to gently warm the warped section, then close the door and let the seal cool in its correct position. This is a temporary fix — it may buy you a few weeks, but the seal will likely need replacing.

Check the Door Alignment

If the fridge is not level, or if the door hinges have loosened over time, the door may not be sitting square in the frame. Check that the fridge is level using a spirit level on top. Check the hinges for loose screws and tighten them. On some models, the door can be adjusted up or down at the hinge to improve alignment.

When the Seal Needs Replacing

If the seal is cracked, torn, hardened, or no longer bounces back when you press it, cleaning and reshaping will not help — it needs a new gasket. Door seals are model-specific, so the correct part needs to be sourced for your exact fridge. Fitting a new seal is straightforward for a technician but fiddly for a DIY job, as the gasket needs to be seated evenly all the way around to avoid new leak points.

What Happens if You Ignore a Bad Seal

A failing door seal is not just an inconvenience — it costs you money and shortens the life of your fridge. The compressor works harder and longer, which increases your power bill and accelerates wear on the most expensive component in the fridge. Food spoils faster because the internal temperature fluctuates. Excess frost build-up in the freezer can block vents and cause further cooling problems.
