Seeing CL on your LG washing machine, dryer, or dishwasher display? The CL code on LG appliances stands for Child Lock — it is not an error code indicating a fault. It means the child lock feature has been activated, which disables the buttons on the control panel to prevent children (or accidental touches) from changing settings mid-cycle. Here is how to turn it off.
If you have tried the steps below and the child lock will not deactivate, book a repair online or call (07) 3062 2377.
How to Turn Off CL (Child Lock) on LG Washing Machines
Front Loader Washing Machines
On most LG front loader models, press and hold the Child Lock button for 3 to 5 seconds. The CL indicator will disappear and the controls will respond again. On some models, the child lock button is a dedicated button on the control panel. On others, it is a secondary function of another button — look for a small lock icon or “Child Lock” text printed above or below one of the buttons.
Top Loader Washing Machines
On LG top loaders, the method varies by model. On most models with a digital display, press and hold the Temp and Option buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. On newer models, look for a dedicated Child Lock button or a lock icon on the control panel. If neither method works, check your model’s user manual — LG has manuals available for download on their Australian support website.
How to Turn Off CL on LG Dryers
On most LG dryers, press and hold the Child Lock button (or the button with the lock icon) for 3 to 5 seconds. The CL display will clear. On some heat pump dryer models, you may need to press and hold two buttons simultaneously — typically Dry Level and Time Dry, or the combination shown on the control panel with a lock icon.
How to Turn Off CL on LG Dishwashers
On LG dishwashers, the child lock is usually activated and deactivated by pressing and holding the Rinse and Spray buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. On some newer models, there is a dedicated Child Lock button. Check for a lock icon on the control panel to identify the correct button or combination.
What if the Child Lock Will Not Turn Off?
If you have tried the correct button combination for your model and the CL indicator will not clear, there are a few things to check.
Try a Power Reset
Turn the appliance off at the wall, wait 60 seconds, and turn it back on. Try the child lock deactivation sequence again. A power reset clears temporary software glitches that can sometimes prevent the child lock from responding.
Check for a Stuck Button
If a button on the control panel is physically stuck — from spilled detergent, moisture, or wear — the machine may not register your presses correctly. Wipe down the control panel with a damp cloth and press each button to check that it clicks and springs back properly.
Control Board Fault
In rare cases, the child lock getting stuck on can indicate a fault with the main control board. If a power reset does not work and the buttons are all functioning, the control board may need diagnosis and possible replacement by a technician.
