Dryer Overheating — Causes, Fire Risks & Expert Repair in Brisbane

A dryer that’s running excessively hot isn’t just damaging your clothes — it’s a genuine fire hazard. Overheating dryers are one of the leading causes of house fires in Australia, and it’s a problem we take extremely seriously at Always Prompt Repairs. If your dryer is producing scorching hot air, burning or singeing clothes, or the exterior casing is too hot to touch, stop using it immediately and book a professional inspection.

Why Is My Dryer Overheating?

Dryers generate significant heat to evaporate moisture from your laundry. Multiple safety systems regulate this temperature — thermostats, thermal fuses, and airflow sensors all work together to keep the heat within safe operating limits. When any of these components fail, or when airflow is restricted, the dryer can rapidly exceed safe temperatures.

Blocked Lint Filter and Exhaust Vent

This is the number one cause of dryer overheating and the most dangerous. Lint is extremely flammable, and when it accumulates in the filter, exhaust duct, or vent outlet, it restricts the airflow that carries hot, moist air out of the machine. With nowhere to go, heat builds up inside the drum to dangerous levels. In Brisbane’s humid climate, lint can also combine with moisture to create dense blockages that are harder to clear than dry lint alone.

Beyond the lint filter you clean after each load, lint also accumulates inside the exhaust ductwork, in the vent flap at the external wall, and internally around the heating element housing. These areas require periodic deep cleaning that most homeowners don’t realise is necessary.

Failed Cycling Thermostat

The cycling thermostat regulates drum temperature by switching the heating element on and off throughout the cycle. When it fails — typically stuck in the closed (heating) position — the element runs continuously without cycling off, causing temperatures to climb well beyond the intended range. This puts enormous stress on other safety components and dramatically increases fire risk.

Blown Thermal Fuse or High-Limit Thermostat

These are safety devices designed to cut power to the heating element if temperatures exceed safe limits. When they fail, there’s nothing to prevent runaway heating. Some dryers will stop heating entirely when a thermal fuse blows (which is actually the safe outcome), but in certain failure modes the heating can continue unregulated.

Faulty Heating Element

A heating element that has partially shorted can draw more current than designed, producing excessive heat. In some cases, a broken element coil can make contact with the element housing or drum, creating a direct short that produces intense localised heat — enough to scorch clothes or even ignite lint deposits.

Failing Motor or Blower

The blower fan draws air through the drum and out the exhaust. If the motor is slowing down due to worn bearings, or the blower wheel is damaged or clogged, airflow drops even with a clean lint filter. Reduced airflow means heat can’t escape, and internal temperatures rise. You might notice the dryer sounds different — quieter than usual, or making a high-pitched whine.

Warning Signs of an Overheating Dryer

Don’t ignore these signals. Clothes coming out extremely hot to the touch or with a burnt smell. Scorch marks, brown spots, or melted synthetic fabric on dried items. The top or sides of the dryer too hot to comfortably rest your hand on. A burning smell during operation. The laundry room feeling unusually hot or humid when the dryer is running. Excessive drying times combined with very hot air — this often indicates restricted airflow causing heat build-up.

The Fire Risk Is Real

According to fire services across Australia, clothes dryers cause hundreds of house fires each year. The combination of high heat, flammable lint, and restricted airflow creates the perfect conditions for ignition. Most dryer fires start in the lint trap, exhaust duct, or around the heating element area. The risk is highest when the dryer is left running unattended — which is exactly when most people run their dryers.

If your dryer is showing any overheating symptoms, it’s not something to monitor or live with. Disconnect the dryer from power and do not use it again until it has been professionally inspected and repaired.

Preventive Maintenance Tips

Prevention is far better than dealing with an overheating emergency. Clean the lint filter after every single load — no exceptions. Have the exhaust duct professionally cleaned at least once a year, more often if you run your dryer daily. Check the external vent flap periodically to ensure it opens freely and isn’t blocked by debris, spider webs, or garden growth. Never overload the dryer — an overpacked drum restricts airflow around the clothes and through the filter. For related dryer issues, see our guides on dryers not heating and dryers not spinning.
