International Repair Day is on Saturday 17 October 2026. The annual event is a useful reminder for Brisbane households to check whether a faulty washing machine can be repaired before ordering a replacement. The decision starts with the machine and the fault in front of you, not a general rule about age or brand.
1. Record exactly what happens
Write down the make and model, any error code, and the point in the cycle where the problem appears. A machine that will not drain, one that will not spin, and one that leaks need different checks. A photo of the model label and error display can help when you book a technician.
If there is a burning smell or water near electrical equipment, stop using the machine and seek qualified help. Do not remove covers or bypass a door lock to keep it running.
2. Check the user manual and your paperwork
Your model’s manual may list simple user checks for the displayed fault, such as a load-balance or drain-filter check. Follow only the steps intended for owners. Keep the purchase record and any manufacturer-warranty information handy. The ACCC explains that Australian consumer guarantees are separate from voluntary warranties; what remedy applies depends on the circumstances.
3. Compare a diagnosis with the whole replacement cost
A repair-versus-replace choice is clearer after a technician identifies the fault and quotes the parts and labour. Compare that quote with the price of a suitable replacement, delivery, installation and removal of the old machine. If a part is unavailable or the repair is uneconomic, a diagnosis can still prevent spending money on the wrong fix.
Always Prompt Repairs has operated from Brisbane since 2009 and is based in Underwood. We diagnose front-loader, top-loader and washer-dryer faults across Greater Brisbane.
