Dryer Won’t Turn On? Here’s What to Check — and When to Call a Technician
You’ve loaded the drum, closed the door, pressed start — and nothing happens. A dryer that won’t power on at all is one of the most frustrating appliance faults, especially when you’ve got a pile of wet washing waiting. Before you assume the worst, there are a few things worth checking yourself. And if it turns out to be more than a simple fix, Always Prompt Repairs can get a technician to your Brisbane home to diagnose and repair the fault.

Quick Checks You Can Do Yourself
Before calling a technician, run through these basics — they account for a surprising number of “dead dryer” callouts:
Check the Power Supply
Make sure the dryer is plugged in firmly and the power point is switched on. Test the outlet by plugging in something else (a phone charger or lamp). If the outlet is dead, check your switchboard — a tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse could be cutting power to the laundry circuit.
Check the Door
Every dryer has a door switch or interlock that prevents the drum from spinning when the door is open. If the door isn’t latching properly — or the switch has failed internally — the dryer won’t start even though the door appears closed. Try opening and firmly re-closing the door, listening for a definite click.
Check for a Child Lock
Many modern dryers have a child lock function that disables the start button. Check your dryer’s display for a lock icon or key symbol. Consult your user manual for how to deactivate it — it’s usually a long press of a specific button or button combination.
Common Causes That Need a Technician
If the basics check out and your dryer still won’t turn on, the fault is likely internal. Here are the most common causes we see across Brisbane:
Blown Thermal Fuse
Dryers have one or more thermal fuses that blow if the machine overheats. Once a thermal fuse blows, it must be replaced — it’s a one-shot safety device that doesn’t reset. A blown thermal fuse is often caused by a blocked lint filter, restricted exhaust duct, or a failing thermostat that let the dryer overheat in the first place. Our technicians replace the fuse and investigate the root cause to prevent it happening again.
Faulty Start Switch or Button
The start switch itself can wear out, especially on older dryers where the button is pressed hundreds of times over the machine’s life. If pressing start produces no click or feedback, the switch contacts may have worn out. We test switch continuity to confirm.
Failed Control Board
In electronically controlled dryers, the main control board manages all functions. A power surge, moisture damage, or component failure on the board can prevent the dryer from powering on. Symptoms range from a completely dead display to partial illumination with no response to button presses. We inspect the board for visible damage (burnt components, corroded traces) and test for output signals.
Motor Fault
If the dryer hums briefly but doesn’t start, the motor may be seized or its start capacitor may have failed. In some cases, the motor’s thermal overload trips due to overheating, and the motor will restart after cooling down. If the motor is genuinely failed, replacement is usually the most cost-effective repair.
Wiring or Connection Fault
Loose terminal connections, corroded wiring, or a damaged power cord can prevent power from reaching the dryer’s internal components. This is particularly common in laundry areas exposed to moisture. Our technicians inspect the wiring from the plug to the control board to find breaks or loose connections.
