The three dryer types and why it matters
Most Brisbane homes have one of three dryer types. Each fails in different ways and needs different parts on the van.
Vented dryers
The old reliable. A heating element, a fan, a thermostat and a vent hose. When they break, the usual suspects are the heating element (no heat, drum still turns), the thermostat or thermal cutout (heat works briefly then dies), or the drive belt (drum doesn’t turn at all). Most Westinghouse, Simpson, Fisher & Paykel and older Bosch dryers fall into this category. Parts are cheap, repairs are quick, and a vented dryer that’s serviced properly will run another 5-10 years.
Condenser dryers
A vented dryer with a heat exchanger that condenses the moisture into a tank instead of venting it outside. The extra mechanics — heat exchanger, condensate pump, tank float sensor — give them more failure points. Common faults are the condensate pump failing (water sits in the base, machine throws an error), heat exchanger blocked with lint (drying times double), or NTC sensor faults giving false temperature readings.
Heat-pump dryers
The new generation — Bosch, Miele, Fisher & Paykel and LG heat-pump models. Half the energy use of a vented dryer but the diagnostic complexity is closer to a fridge. Compressor faults, refrigerant leaks, sensor errors and control-board failures are the main repair categories. These need a tech who’s worked on heat-pump systems before — not every appliance shop in Brisbane will touch them. We do.
Specific dryer faults we see every week
Dryer not heating
Element failure on vented dryers; flow-through heater or heat-pump compressor on the newer machines. Sometimes it’s a tripped thermal cutout caused by a blocked vent — the fix is replacing the cutout and clearing the lint blockage that caused it, or it’ll happen again in a fortnight.
Dryer takes hours to dry one load
Almost always lint. Either in the lint filter (obvious), the secondary lint trap (hidden, never cleaned), the heat exchanger (condenser/heat-pump models), or the vent ducting. We pull it apart, clean it out, and check airflow before we hand it back.
Dryer making thumping or squealing noises
Drum bearings, idler pulleys or drum support rollers. Squealing is usually the idler; thumping is usually a bearing on the way out. Both are mechanical, both are fixable, neither is dangerous to keep using for a week or two — but the longer you leave it the more likely you are to damage the drum or belt.
Dryer won’t start or trips the breaker
Door interlock, thermal cutout, start capacitor (on motor-start dryers) or earth fault inside the heating element. Tripping the breaker means there’s a current path to earth somewhere — don’t keep resetting it, get it diagnosed.
Dryer error codes
LG and Samsung heat-pump dryers will throw codes like CL, AE, HE, C9 when something’s wrong. Bosch heat-pump models use E-codes (E32, E33, E36 etc.). Miele are number codes. Take a photo of the code before you call — saves time on the phone and on site.
Brands we repair
We’re authorised warranty agents for Miele, Bosch, ASKO, Liebherr and Neff — warranty work on those brands is at no cost to you if the dryer is in warranty.
We also do non-warranty dryer repair on Fisher & Paykel, Westinghouse, Simpson, Hoover, LG, Samsung, Hisense, Electrolux, Beko, Smeg, Haier and others.
We do not repair gas-powered dryers, electrical wiring or air-conditioning. Dryer repairs we do — every type, every fault, every brand worth fixing.
Where we service
Greater Brisbane, Logan City, Moreton Bay, Redland, Ipswich and the Northern Gold Coast (anything south of Surfers Paradise is generally outside our service area). Most metro Brisbane bookings get a tech the next business day, often same-day if you book before 10am.
Before the tech arrives
- Find the model number. It’s on a sticker inside the door frame, on the back panel, or on the rim of the drum opening. Snap a photo.
- Note the symptom and any error code. “Not heating” is fine. “Not heating and showing E33” is better.
- Clear the lint filter. Then check the secondary filter if your dryer has one.
- Make sure the dryer is accessible — if it’s stacked above the washing machine on a bracket, mention it when you book so we know to bring two techs or extra gear.
