Bosch Dishwasher Stuck on E24? Here’s What’s Going Wrong
Your Bosch dishwasher has stopped mid-cycle and is flashing E24 on the display. The dishes are sitting in dirty water, and the machine won’t budge. The E24 error is a drainage fault — the dishwasher is telling you it can’t pump the water out. It’s one of the most common Bosch dishwasher errors we repair across Brisbane, and while the fix is sometimes simple, it can also point to a component that needs replacing. Book a repair online if you’d rather skip the troubleshooting and get it sorted fast.
What the E24 Error Code Means
The E24 code on Bosch dishwashers indicates a drainage fault. Specifically, the control module has detected that water remains in the base of the machine after the drain pump has run for its allotted time. This could mean water isn’t physically leaving the machine, or that the sensor detecting water level is giving a false reading. Bosch uses this code across its Series 2, Series 4, Series 6, and Series 8 dishwasher ranges — if your model starts with SMS, SMV, SMU, or SHP, this guide applies.
The E24 differs from the E15 error (which indicates water in the base tray triggering the flood protection system) and the E04 error (which relates to the flow sensor). The E24 is strictly about drainage — water going out, not coming in.
Common Causes of the Bosch E24 Error
Blocked Drain Filter
The cylindrical filter assembly in the bottom of your Bosch dishwasher catches food scraps, broken glass, and other debris before they reach the drain pump. Over time, especially if plates aren’t scraped before loading, this filter clogs up. A heavily blocked filter can restrict water flow enough to trigger the E24. It’s the first thing to check and the easiest to fix — twist it out anticlockwise, rinse under the tap, and clear any debris from the sump area beneath it. You’d be surprised how many E24 calls we attend where a thorough filter clean solves the problem entirely.
Kinked or Blocked Drain Hose
The corrugated drain hose runs from the back of the dishwasher to your sink waste or a dedicated drain point under the bench. If the dishwasher has been pushed back hard against the wall, this hose can kink and restrict flow. Pull the machine out and trace the hose from the dishwasher to the drain connection — straighten any kinks and ensure the hose has a smooth, continuous fall. Also check the spigot where the hose connects to the sink waste — these small-diameter fittings are notorious for collecting grease and food residue from both the dishwasher and the sink.
Faulty Drain Pump
The drain pump is a small impeller pump mounted in the base of the machine. It’s designed to run at the end of each wash and rinse cycle to evacuate water. Over time, the impeller can jam (a common culprit is small pieces of broken glass or olive pits), the motor windings can fail, or the pump housing can crack. If you can hear the pump humming but water isn’t draining, the impeller may be jammed. If there’s no sound at all when the machine should be draining, the pump motor has likely failed.
Drain Hose Loop Too Low
Bosch dishwashers require the drain hose to loop up to at least 600mm above floor level before dropping down to the drain point. This high loop prevents dirty water from the sink drain siphoning back into the dishwasher. If the loop is missing or too low, water can flow back in after draining, making the machine think it hasn’t drained properly. Check the installation guide for your specific model — the high loop requirement is consistent across Bosch’s range but the exact height varies.
Blocked Sink Waste Connection
If your dishwasher drains into the kitchen sink waste (via a spigot on the trap), a partial blockage in the sink drain can create enough back-pressure to prevent the dishwasher from draining effectively. Run the kitchen tap and watch how quickly the sink drains. If it’s sluggish, clear the sink drain first — this alone may resolve the E24 on the dishwasher.
Troubleshooting the E24 at Home
Step 1: Cancel the current cycle and turn the dishwasher off at the power point. Open the door carefully — there may be standing water inside.
Step 2: Remove the bottom rack and unscrew the cylindrical filter from the base of the machine. Clean it thoroughly under running water. Check the sump area beneath the filter for any debris, glass, or foreign objects.
Step 3: Pull the machine out from under the bench (you may need to unscrew the mounting brackets at the top). Check the drain hose for kinks and ensure the high loop is in place.
Step 4: Run a short rinse cycle and listen for the drain pump. You should hear it activate towards the end of the cycle — a steady humming sound from the base of the machine.
Step 5: If the error persists, the drain pump or its wiring likely needs professional attention. Book online here and we’ll have a technician out to diagnose it.
How We Repair the Bosch E24
Our technicians see E24 errors regularly on Bosch dishwashers across Brisbane. The diagnostic process starts with confirming the fault code and checking the basics — filter, hose routing, and drain connection. If those are clear, we’ll test the drain pump electrically using a multimeter to check the motor windings, and mechanically by inspecting the impeller for obstructions or wear.
Drain pump replacements are one of the most common repairs we do on Bosch dishwashers. Our technicians carry a range of commonly used parts on every van, so most E24 repairs are completed in a single visit. For older or less common models where a specific pump variant is needed, we’ll order the part and return to fit it — Return visits are $29 plus parts and labour. We’ll provide a fixed price quote before any work is carried out.
