Fisher & Paykel F1 Error Code — Flood Protection Activated

Fisher & Paykel F1 Error — Water Leak Detected

Your Fisher & Paykel washing machine or dishwasher has stopped working and is flashing the F1 error code. Water may be pooling under or around the machine, or there might be no visible leak at all — but the machine knows something is wrong. The F1 code means the flood protection system has been triggered, and the machine has shut itself down to prevent water damage to your home. Here’s what’s happening and what you can do about it. If you’d rather have a professional handle it, book a repair online and we’ll send a technician.

What the F1 Error Code Means

Fisher & Paykel uses the F1 code to indicate that the appliance’s flood protection system has detected water where it shouldn’t be — typically in the base tray beneath the machine. Most F&P washing machines and dishwashers have a float switch or moisture sensor in this tray. When water accumulates and lifts the float (or wets the sensor), the machine immediately stops all operations and activates the drain pump to try to evacuate the water. The F1 code then appears on the display.

This is a safety feature, and an important one. A slow leak left unchecked can cause significant water damage to cabinetry, flooring, and subfloor structures — especially in Queensland’s timber-framed houses where moisture can lead to rot and termite vulnerability. The machine is doing its job by alerting you early.

Common Causes of the F1 Error

Leaking Door Seal (Washing Machines)

On F&P front-loading washers, the rubber door boot seal is the most common leak source. These seals flex with every cycle as the drum rotates, and over time they can develop small tears or cracks — particularly along the bottom fold where water and debris accumulate. Mould growth in the seal folds can also degrade the rubber. Inspect the seal carefully by pulling back the folds and looking for any tears, perforations, or areas where the rubber has hardened and cracked.

Blocked or Cracked Drain Hose

The internal drain hose connecting the drum to the drain pump runs through the base of the machine. If this hose develops a crack, works loose from its clamp, or gets punctured by a stray object that made it past the filter, water drips into the base tray and triggers the float switch. External drain hoses can also leak at their connection points — check where the hose meets the machine and where it connects to your drain point.

Inlet Hose or Valve Leak

Water can enter the base tray from above as well. A leaking inlet valve (where the water supply hoses connect at the back of the machine) or a perished inlet hose washer can drip water down the back of the machine and into the base. This type of leak is often slow and intermittent — you might not notice dampness around the machine because the water is running down the back panel internally.

Faulty Tub Seal or Bearings (Washers)

On washing machines, the main tub seal sits where the drum shaft passes through the outer tub. This seal prevents wash water from reaching the bearings. When it fails, water seeps past the bearings and drips into the base tray. You’ll often hear a grinding or rumbling noise during the spin cycle if the bearings are damaged — this usually develops gradually over weeks or months before the F1 code appears. Bearing and seal replacements are a more involved repair, but they’re worthwhile on newer machines.

Dishwasher-Specific Causes

On Fisher & Paykel dishwashers — including the popular DishDrawer range — the F1 can be caused by a leaking wash motor seal, a cracked sump housing, or a door seal that’s lost its compression. DishDrawers are particularly prone to F1 errors when food debris prevents the drawer from sealing properly against the cabinet frame. Clean the seal and the sealing surfaces with a damp cloth and check for any food particles preventing a proper seal.

What to Do When You See F1

Step 1: Turn the machine off at the power point immediately. If there’s visible water on the floor, mop it up to prevent damage to your flooring.

Step 2: Turn off the water supply taps behind the machine. This stops any further water entering the system.

Step 3: If you can safely access the base tray (usually by removing a kick panel at the front), check for standing water. Use towels to soak it up. On some models, you can manually lower the float switch — but the machine will just trigger again if the underlying leak isn’t fixed.

Step 4: Visually inspect hose connections, the door seal, and the area around the inlet valves for obvious signs of water. If you can identify the source, great — if not, it’s time to call in a technician.

Once the base tray is dry and the float switch has returned to its normal position, some machines will allow you to reset and run a cycle. However, if there’s an active leak, the F1 will return quickly. Don’t keep running the machine through repeated F1 errors — each cycle potentially adds more water to places it shouldn’t be.

Professional F1 Repair

Our technicians diagnose F1 errors by systematically checking each potential leak source while running the machine through controlled fill and wash cycles. We’ll identify exactly where the water is coming from and advise on the repair. Common fixes include door seal replacement, hose replacement or re-clamping, inlet valve replacement, and — for older machines — tub seal and bearing replacement.

Our technicians carry a range of commonly used parts on every van. For model-specific components, we’ll order the part and return to fit it — Return visits are $29 plus parts and labour. We’ll provide a fixed price quote before any work is carried out.
