Fisher & Paykel F2 Error Code — What It Means & How to Fix It

What Does the F2 Error Mean on a Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer?

The Fisher & Paykel F2 error code indicates a drain fault — your DishDrawer has attempted to pump water out and either could not drain at all or could not drain within the expected time. The control board monitors the water level during the drain phase, and when water remains in the drawer beyond the timeout period, it triggers F2 and stops the cycle.

Fisher & Paykel DishDrawers are extremely popular in Brisbane — we see them in a significant proportion of the homes we visit. Models like the DD60DCHX9, DD60DCW9, DD60SDFHX9, and the older DD603 series all use the F2 code for drain faults. The dual-drawer design means each drawer has its own drain pump and drain path, so F2 typically affects only one drawer at a time.

After 17 years repairing appliances across Greater Brisbane, F2 is the most common Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer error code we encounter — and it is often something a homeowner can fix themselves with a simple clean.

Common Causes of the Fisher & Paykel F2 Error

Blocked filters. The DishDrawer has a multi-layer filter system at the bottom of each drawer — a coarse filter and a fine mesh screen. Food scraps, bones, glass fragments, and general debris accumulate here over time. When the filters block completely, water cannot reach the drain pump. This is by far the most common cause of F2, and it is entirely preventable with regular cleaning.

Blocked or kinked drain hose. The drain hose exits the rear of the DishDrawer and connects to a standpipe or sink waste. If the hose is kinked behind the machine, crushed by cabinetry, or internally blocked with grease and food residue, water cannot exit. A common issue we see in Brisbane homes is the drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe, which creates a siphon lock that prevents drainage.

Faulty drain pump. Each DishDrawer drawer has its own small drain pump (part number 420324P on many models). These pumps are compact and work hard, and after several years of use, the pump motor can burn out or the impeller can become jammed with debris that has bypassed the filters — often small fragments of broken glass or fruit seeds.

Blocked sump area. Below the filters, there is a sump chamber where water collects before being pumped out. Small items like toothpicks, cherry pits, broken glass, or accumulated grease can block this area. If you clean the filters but do not check the sump beneath them, the blockage may persist.

Standpipe or plumbing blockage. If the standpipe the DishDrawer drains into is partially blocked (common in older Brisbane homes with ageing plumbing), the machine cannot pump water out fast enough. This is especially common when the dishwasher shares a drain connection with the kitchen sink.

DIY Troubleshooting Steps

Before calling a technician, try these steps. You will need towels, a soft brush, and possibly a small torch to inspect the sump area.

  1. Cancel and power off. Press and hold the power button to cancel the current cycle. If there is standing water in the drawer, you will need to scoop or sponge out as much as you can before proceeding.
  2. Remove and clean the filters. Open the affected drawer fully. Lift out the spray arm (it usually just lifts or twists off). Underneath, you will find the coarse filter and fine mesh filter. Remove both and rinse them thoroughly under running water. Use a soft brush to scrub away any food residue, grease, or mineral deposits. Hold them up to the light — if you cannot see through the fine mesh clearly, they need more cleaning.
  3. Inspect the sump area. With the filters removed, look down into the sump drain area at the bottom of the drawer. Use a torch to check for any debris — broken glass, food scraps, bones, or foreign objects that may be blocking the drain path or jamming the pump impeller. Remove anything you find.
  4. Check the drain hose. Pull the DishDrawer forward to access the rear. Inspect the drain hose from the machine to where it enters the wall or connects to the sink waste. Straighten any kinks. If the hose is pushed into a standpipe, ensure it is inserted no more than 100mm (about 4 inches) — too deep and it can create a siphon lock. Also check that the hose rises above the standpipe entry point to prevent backflow.
  5. Check the standpipe. Disconnect the drain hose from the standpipe and pour a bucket of water directly down the pipe. If the water drains slowly or backs up, the standpipe is blocked and needs clearing — this is a plumbing issue rather than an appliance fault.
  6. Refit and test. Replace the filters and spray arm. Close the drawer and run a short rinse cycle. Listen for the drain pump activating at the end of the cycle — you should hear a quiet humming sound. If the cycle completes without F2, the issue was a blockage. If F2 returns, the drain pump likely needs professional attention.

When to Call a Professional

If you have cleaned the filters, cleared the sump, confirmed the drain hose is not kinked, and checked the standpipe — but F2 still appears — the drain pump has likely failed and needs replacement. You should also call a technician if you can hear the drain pump running but no water is being pumped (indicating a broken impeller), if the pump makes no sound at all when it should be draining, or if you find broken glass in the sump that may have damaged the pump.

What the Repair Typically Involves

When we attend a Fisher & Paykel F2 fault, we start by verifying the drain path is clear, then test the drain pump directly. We check the pump motor for continuity and measure its current draw under load. If the pump has failed, we replace it — this involves removing the drawer mechanism to access the pump assembly underneath.

On most DishDrawer models, drain pump replacement takes 30 to 45 minutes. Our technicians carry a range of commonly used parts on every van. Where the right part is on hand, the repair can often be completed the same day. If a specific part is needed, we provide a fixed quote before ordering.

$219 includes a callout and up to 30 minutes labour onsite — most faults are diagnosed and many repaired in that time. 12-month warranty on all parts supplied and installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Fisher & Paykel F2 error dangerous?

No. The F2 error simply means the drawer cannot drain water. The machine stops to prevent overflow. There is no electrical hazard or flood risk from the error code itself — it is a protective measure.

Can I use the other drawer if one shows F2?

Yes. On double DishDrawer models, each drawer operates completely independently with its own pump, motor, and control board. If one drawer shows F2, the other can continue to be used normally while you arrange a repair.

How long does the repair take?

Most F2 repairs are completed in a single visit, subject to parts availability. If the issue is a blocked filter or kinked hose, the fix takes 15 to 20 minutes. If the drain pump needs replacing, allow 30 to 45 minutes. Our technicians carry a range of commonly used parts on every van for same-day completion.

Why does my DishDrawer keep showing F2?

Recurring F2 errors usually point to one of two issues — either the filters are not being cleaned frequently enough (we recommend rinsing them weekly), or the drain pump is weakening with age and struggling to clear water fully. A technician can test the pump’s output pressure to determine if it is still performing within specification.
