Samsung 5E Error Code — What It Means & How to Fix It

What Does the 5E Error Mean on a Samsung Washing Machine?

The Samsung 5E error code indicates a drain fault — your washing machine has tried to pump water out of the drum and could not complete the drain cycle within the expected time. The control board monitors the water level during draining, and when water remains in the drum after the drain pump has run for its timeout period, it triggers 5E and halts the cycle.

Important note: Many Samsung owners read this code as “SE” because of how the seven-segment LED display renders the number 5 — it looks identical to the letter S. The correct code is 5E, but searching for either term will lead you to the same fault. If your Samsung displays “SE,” this is the same error.

Samsung is one of the most popular washing machine brands in Brisbane, and we see the 5E error regularly across models including the WF756UMSAWQ, WW75J5420GS, WW85T554DAW, and the newer Bespoke AI series. It is one of the top three Samsung fault codes we attend — and like most drain faults, the cause is usually a blockage that a homeowner can fix themselves.

Common Causes of the Samsung 5E Error

Blocked debris filter. Samsung calls their drain filter the “debris filter” — it sits behind a small access panel at the bottom-front of the machine. This filter catches coins, hair clips, buttons, tissues, small socks, and lint before they can reach the drain pump. It is the single most common cause of 5E. In Brisbane, we often find the filter completely packed with pet hair, tissue fragments, and the occasional $2 coin. Cleaning this filter every month can prevent most 5E errors.

Kinked or blocked drain hose. The drain hose connects the rear of the machine to a standpipe or sink waste. If the hose is kinked (often from the machine being pushed back too far), crushed by shifting cabinetry, or internally blocked with lint and soap scum buildup, water cannot exit. Samsung’s drain hose is corrugated, which means internal ridges can trap lint over time.

Standpipe or plumbing restriction. A partially blocked standpipe is a frequently overlooked cause of 5E. The standpipe accumulates soap residue, grease, and lint over the years. When the washing machine pumps water out at full flow, a restricted standpipe cannot handle the volume, and water backs up. This is particularly common in older Brisbane homes where laundry plumbing has not been updated.

Faulty drain pump. The drain pump is an electric motor with an impeller that pushes water from the drum through the drain hose. After years of use, the motor can burn out, the impeller can crack or warp, or a foreign object (underwire from a bra is a classic) can jam the impeller. Samsung drain pumps typically last 5 to 8 years under normal use.

Excessive suds from too much detergent. Front-loaders use significantly less water than top-loaders, which means they also need much less detergent. Using too much creates thick foam that the drain pump cannot efficiently clear. Brisbane’s water is relatively soft compared to many other Australian cities, so you can use even less detergent than the packet suggests — typically half to two-thirds of the recommended dose.

DIY Troubleshooting Steps

Before calling a technician, work through these steps. You will need towels, a shallow container, and about 20 minutes.

  1. Drain standing water from the drum. Open the access panel at the bottom-front of the machine (it usually pops open or has a small release button). Inside, you will find the debris filter cap and a small emergency drain hose. Pull the emergency drain hose out, place the end in a shallow container, and remove the small plug. Water will flow out slowly — be patient and empty the container as needed. A full drum can hold 50 to 60 litres.
  2. Clean the debris filter. With the water drained, place towels under the filter area. Turn the debris filter cap slowly anticlockwise — more residual water will trickle out. Pull the filter out completely and remove all trapped items. Common finds include coins, hair ties, tissues, small toy parts, and clumps of pet hair and lint. Rinse the filter under running water. Before refitting, check inside the filter housing — look for the pump impeller blades and spin them with your finger to confirm they rotate freely.
  3. Inspect the drain hose. Pull the machine forward to access the rear. Follow the drain hose from the machine to the wall connection. Straighten any kinks or sharp bends. If you can disconnect the hose from the standpipe, flush water through it to check for internal blockages. Samsung recommends the drain hose should not be inserted more than 15cm into the standpipe and should not be lower than 60cm or higher than 90cm from the floor.
  4. Test the standpipe. With the drain hose removed from the standpipe, pour a full bucket of water directly into the pipe. If it drains freely and quickly, the standpipe is clear. If it backs up or drains slowly, the pipe needs clearing — try a drain cleaning product, or call a plumber if the blockage is severe.
  5. Check your detergent amount. If you noticed excessive foam or suds in the drum, you are using too much detergent. Switch to a high-efficiency (HE) formulation and use half to two-thirds of the amount shown on the packet. For Brisbane water, this is usually sufficient for a good clean.
  6. Reset and test. Refit the debris filter, reconnect the drain hose, and push the machine back. Turn it off at the wall for two minutes, then back on. Run a Spin & Drain cycle. If it completes without 5E, the blockage has been cleared. Run a normal wash with a small load to confirm.

When to Call a Professional

If the debris filter is clean, the drain hose is clear, the standpipe drains freely, and 5E still appears, the drain pump has almost certainly failed. Call a technician if the pump is silent when it should be running, if it hums but does not pump water, or if you hear grinding noises from the pump area. Also call if you find foreign objects like underwire or broken plastic in the filter housing — these items may have damaged the pump impeller even if they are no longer jamming it.

What the Repair Typically Involves

When we attend a Samsung 5E fault, we start by verifying the entire drain path is clear, then test the drain pump motor. We check continuity, current draw, and impeller condition. If the pump has failed, we replace the complete pump assembly — this typically takes 30 to 45 minutes on most Samsung front-loaders.

$219 includes a callout and up to 30 minutes labour onsite — most faults are diagnosed and many repaired in that time. 12-month warranty on all parts supplied and installed.

How Always Prompt Repairs Can Help

Samsung is one of the most common brands we repair across Brisbane. Our technicians work on Samsung washing machines daily and carry common Samsung parts — including drain pumps, debris filters, and control boards — on our service vans for same-day repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Samsung 5E the same as SE?

Yes. On Samsung LED displays, the number 5 is rendered identically to the letter S, so many owners read the code as “SE.” The official code is 5E, but both refer to the same drain fault. If your Samsung washer shows SE, follow the same troubleshooting steps outlined above.

Is the 5E error dangerous?

No. The 5E error is a drain fault — the machine stops because it cannot pump water out. There is no electrical hazard or flood risk from the error itself. However, do not leave standing water in the drum for more than a day — in Brisbane’s warm climate, mould can start to grow in the drum and door seal within 48 hours.

How much does it cost to fix a Samsung 5E error?

$219 includes a callout and up to 30 minutes labour onsite — most faults are diagnosed and many repaired in that time. If the issue is a blocked filter (the most common cause), the repair is usually completed within the callout fee alone. If a new drain pump is needed, the part cost is quoted separately. We offer a $20 discount for seniors, pensioners, and students.

Can I open the door with 5E showing?

Not while there is water in the drum. Samsung front-loaders keep the door locked as a flood-prevention measure. Use the emergency drain hose behind the bottom access panel to drain the water first, then the door lock will release. Never try to force the door open — this can damage the lock mechanism.
