Common Ilve Oven & Cooktop Problems
Fan Motor Bearing Noise
A grinding, whining, or rattling noise coming from behind the oven cavity when the fan is running. It gets progressively worse over weeks and eventually the fan may seize entirely, causing the oven to overheat in spots and undercook in others.
Likely causes: Worn fan motor bearings — this is a mechanical wear item that fails with age and use. Ilve range cookers often have dual fans (main oven plus secondary oven or grill fan), and the high operating temperatures accelerate bearing wear. A loose fan blade striking the oven liner produces a different — more rhythmic — noise.

Door Hinge and Gasket Wear
The oven door doesn’t close properly, feels loose or lopsided, or heat escapes noticeably from the front of the oven during use. You might see scorching or discolouration on cabinetry adjacent to the oven.
Likely causes: Ilve range cooker doors are heavy — particularly on 90cm and 120cm models — and the hinge springs and hinge arms wear out with repeated opening and closing over years. The door gasket (the rope or rubber seal around the oven cavity) compresses, hardens, and cracks with heat exposure, reducing the seal.

Electronic Control Board Failures
The digital display is blank, shows error codes, doesn’t respond to button presses, or the oven behaves erratically — heating at wrong temperatures, ignoring timer settings, or switching modes on its own. More common on newer Ilve models with electronic touch controls.
Likely causes: Failed control board (power supply section, relay section, or the microprocessor itself), power surge damage (Brisbane storms are a regular culprit), moisture ingress behind the control panel from steam during cooking, or a faulty temperature sensor sending incorrect readings to the board.

Cooktop Element or Burner Issues (Electric & Gas)

Likely causes: On electric ceramic cooktops — failed heating element, cracked glass (impact damage), or faulty infinite switch/energy regulator. On induction models — failed induction coil, cracked glass, or control board faults.
