As many of you are aware, changes to legislation governing smoke alarms in Queensland came into effect on January 1, 2017. The changes will take effect over 10 years in a three-phase plan. Therefore by 2027, old-style smoke alarms (pre-2017) will be no more.
According to the legislation, all Queensland homes must be fitted out with interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in all bedrooms, hallways that connect bedrooms with the rest of the house and on every level of the house.
Basically, a photoelectric smoke alarm is able to see smoke which means that it can easily detect smouldering fires. In fact, it uses light to detect the fire. So normally, an LED light in the light-sensing chamber shoots a beam of light straight through the chamber. However, if smoke enters this chamber the light no longer beams in a straight line but is deflected into a photosensor in a different area of the same chamber. When light hits this sensor, the alarm sounds. Get all that? Well you don’t need to… just know that you need to get a photoelectric smoke alarm and we’ll install it for you.
