Washing Machine Not Draining? Brisbane Repair & Safe Checks

Is your washing machine not draining, with water left in the drum at the end of a cycle? Make a note of the model number, any display code and whether you heard the machine try to drain. Those details help with diagnosis; a noise or code alone does not prove the pump has failed.

Safe checks before you book

1. Record what happened in the cycle

Was water left in the drum, or did the drum empty but the clothes stay soaked? The second pattern may be a spin problem rather than a drain problem; see our washing machine not spinning guide. Photograph the exact error code and model label if you can reach them safely. Code meanings and filter access vary by machine.

2. Look at the visible drain hose

If the hose is visible without moving a heavy or built-in appliance, check for an obvious kink or crush. Do not pull a stacked or enclosed washer out, disconnect a hose or change its installation height based on a generic online instruction. The correct hose arrangement depends on the model manual and plumbing connection.

3. Follow your model manual for any filter check

Some front loaders have a user-accessible pump filter and an emergency drain procedure; others differ. Switch the machine off and unplug it before opening a filter, and follow the exact manual. Water may be retained and may be hot. Do not force a panel or door. If the instructions are unclear, leave the check for a technician.

For a model-specific example, Samsung Australia’s 5E drainage guide distinguishes hose checks from front-loader filter steps and directs owners to their manual. Its steps are not universal instructions for other brands.

What can stop a washing machine draining?

A restricted external hose, filter or internal drain path is one possibility. A pump, door interlock, sensor or electrical control issue may produce a similar symptom. A humming sound does not establish that the impeller is jammed; silence does not establish that the pump has failed. We test the relevant system on your model before recommending a part.

If water is leaking onto the floor or near electrical equipment, stop using the washer. Keep clear of wet electrical items. Turn off the water or power only if you can reach the control from a safe, dry position. Do not keep running test cycles through a leak.

When to arrange a technician

Book an assessment if the manual’s safe check does not resolve the issue, water remains trapped, the fault recurs, or access to the hose or filter is awkward. Tell us if the washer is stacked, built in or difficult to move. Have the make, model, exact code and a description of the last cycle ready when booking. Our Brisbane washing machine repair service explains the broader diagnosis and repair process.

Price and repair decision

Our $219 callout estimate includes up to 30 minutes of labour on site. Parts and further labour, if required, are additional and quoted after diagnosis. We explain the finding and quote before further work. All prices are estimates only. A $20 senior, pensioner or student discount may apply. Parts supplied and installed by us carry a 12 month warranty.

Whether repair makes sense depends on the diagnosed fault, machine condition, model and parts availability. We can explain the repair option and quote so you can decide; we do not assume that every drainage fault needs a new pump.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my washer humming but not draining?

The sound tells you the machine is attempting part of a cycle, but it does not identify the failed component. Record when the sound occurs and any code, then arrange a diagnosis if the model manual’s safe checks do not help.

Can I clean the pump filter myself?

Only follow the procedure for your exact model if it provides user access. Turn the appliance off and unplug it first. Prepare for retained water, and stop if the panel or filter will not move easily. You can book us to inspect it instead.

How much will a drain repair cost?

The callout estimate is $219 with up to 30 minutes of labour on site. Any parts or further labour are quoted after diagnosis. The total depends on what the machine actually needs and your approval of the quote.
