Washing Machine Overflowing — Causes and Repairs

Washing machine overflowing? Water spilling over the top of the drum or flooding out the door is alarming, but it is almost always caused by a handful of common faults. Some you can check yourself in a few minutes. Others need a qualified technician. Here is what is likely going wrong and what to do about it.

Quick Checks Before Calling a Technician

Before you assume the worst, run through these checks. They are free, they take a few minutes, and they fix the problem more often than you would expect.

Check for Excess Detergent

Too much detergent — or the wrong type — is the single most common cause of overflowing. Front loaders in particular need high-efficiency (HE) detergent, and very little of it. If you see excessive suds rising through the dispenser or door seal, reduce your detergent to half the recommended dose and run a rinse cycle. Liquid detergent tends to cause fewer suds issues than powder in front loaders.

Check the Drain Hose

If the drain hose is kinked, blocked, or pushed too far into the standpipe, water cannot drain fast enough and backs up into the drum. Pull the machine out and check the hose runs downhill without sharp bends. The hose should sit 60 to 90 cm above the floor where it enters the standpipe, and it should not be pushed more than 15 cm into the pipe.

Check the Filter or Coin Trap

Most front loaders have a filter at the bottom front — usually behind a small panel. If this is clogged with lint, coins, or hair ties, the machine cannot pump water out fast enough. Place a towel and shallow tray underneath, unscrew the filter, clear out any debris, and refit it.

Check You Are Not Overloading

An overloaded drum pushes water up and over the door seal on front loaders, or over the rim on top loaders. Follow the manufacturer’s load guide — as a rule, you should be able to fit a fist between the clothes and the top of the drum.

Common Causes That Need a Technician

Faulty Water Inlet Valve

The inlet valve controls how much water enters the machine. If it sticks open or fails to close when the machine reaches the correct fill level, water keeps pouring in and the machine overflows. This requires replacing the valve — it is not a DIY repair because it involves working with water connections and electrical components.

Faulty Pressure Switch

The pressure switch (or pressure sensor) tells the machine how much water is in the drum. If the switch is faulty or the small hose connecting it to the drum is blocked or cracked, the machine does not know the drum is full and keeps filling. A technician can test and replace the switch or hose.

Blocked or Faulty Drain Pump

If the drain pump has failed or is partially blocked, water cannot be removed during the cycle. The machine may continue adding water on schedule while the old water has nowhere to go. You will usually hear the pump struggling — a humming or grinding sound — or no pump noise at all.

Control Board Fault

In modern electronic machines, the main control board manages the fill and drain cycles. A faulty board can misread sensor data or fail to close the inlet valve. This is less common than the mechanical faults above but does happen, particularly after power surges.

What to Do Right Now if Your Machine Is Overflowing

Turn the machine off at the wall immediately. Do not open the door on a front loader until the water level is below the door seal — you will make the flood worse. Mop up standing water to prevent damage to floors and cabinetry. If the drain hose is accessible, lower it into a bucket to gravity-drain some water from the drum.
