Washing Machine Shaking? Expert Repairs in Brisbane

Washing Machine Shaking and Vibrating? Brisbane Repairs

Is your washing machine shaking violently during the spin cycle? A washing machine vibrating so hard it walks across the floor is more than just annoying — it can damage your flooring, plumbing connections, and the machine itself. Left unchecked, excessive vibration leads to expensive internal damage that could have been prevented with a simple repair.

Washing machine shaking during spin cycle - common vibration fault

At Always Prompt Repairs, we fix washing machines that shake, vibrate, and bang across Brisbane, Ipswich, and the Northern Gold Coast. Our technicians carry common suspension parts on board for same-visit repairs on most brands.

Why Is Your Washing Machine Shaking? DIY Checks

Before booking a technician, try these quick checks — they resolve the issue in about 25% of cases:

1. Check the Machine Is Level

Place a spirit level on top of your washing machine front-to-back and side-to-side. All four feet must be firmly on the floor with no rocking. Most machines have adjustable front feet — turn them clockwise to lower, anticlockwise to raise. Once level, tighten the lock nuts against the machine base to prevent them working loose again over time.

2. Check Load Balance

A single heavy item like a towel or blanket can create an unbalanced load that causes violent shaking during spin. Try washing heavy items with other items of similar weight. Avoid washing a single large item alone — add a few towels to balance the drum. Overloading also causes shaking, so check you’re not exceeding the machine’s rated capacity.

3. Check Transit Bolts Are Removed

If your washing machine is relatively new or recently moved, check whether the transit bolts have been removed from the back panel. These large bolts lock the drum for transport and must be removed before use. A machine running with transit bolts in place will shake violently and can suffer serious drum and bearing damage within weeks.

Professional Washing Machine Shaking Repairs

If your machine is level, balanced, and transit bolts are removed but it still shakes excessively, you likely have a worn internal component. Here are the most common mechanical causes our technicians find:

Worn Shock Absorbers

Front-loading washing machines use two or four shock absorbers (dampers) to control drum movement during spin. Over time, the hydraulic fluid leaks or the internal piston wears, reducing their ability to dampen drum oscillation. The result is progressively worsening vibration and banging noises. Shock absorbers are a wear item — typically lasting 5–8 years with average household use.

Broken Suspension Springs

Top-loading machines use suspension springs to support the inner tub assembly. When a spring breaks or detaches from its mounting point, the tub hangs unevenly and creates severe imbalance during spin. You can often hear a metallic scraping sound alongside the shaking. We replace suspension springs in matched sets to ensure even support across all mounting points.

Worn Drum Bearings

The main bearings allow the drum to spin smoothly at high speed. When bearings wear, you’ll hear a rumbling or grinding noise that gets louder during spin, accompanied by increased vibration. Bearing replacement is a significant repair — we’ll assess whether repair or replacement offers better value based on your machine’s age, brand, and overall condition.

Damaged Drum Spider

The spider (or drum shaft support) is the aluminium casting that connects the inner drum to the drive shaft. In some brands — particularly Samsung and LG — the spider is prone to corrosion and cracking from detergent buildup and moisture. A cracked spider causes the drum to wobble irregularly, creating both vibration and unusual noises during all cycle stages.
