Whirlpool Dishwasher Not Working Right? We’ll Fix It
Your Whirlpool dishwasher was humming along reliably for years, and now something’s off. Maybe it won’t drain, it’s leaving dishes dirty, water is leaking onto the floor, or it won’t start at all. Whirlpool dishwashers are solid machines, but every appliance has components that wear out with use. Always Prompt Repairs services Whirlpool dishwashers across Greater Brisbane — our technicians diagnose the fault, explain your options, and carry out the repair, usually in a single visit. Common Whirlpool Dishwasher Problems
Won’t Drain
Standing water in the bottom of the dishwasher after a cycle is one of the most frequent Whirlpool dishwasher complaints. The first thing to check is the drain filter — located in the floor of the tub, it catches food debris before it reaches the drain pump. A heavily clogged filter restricts water flow enough to prevent proper drainage. Remove it, clean it under running water, and check the sump area beneath it for any trapped objects.
If the filter is clear, the drain pump may have failed. These small impeller pumps can jam (common culprits include broken glass, seeds, and small pieces of plastic from container labels) or the motor can burn out. The drain hose and its connection to your kitchen waste can also block with grease buildup — check the spigot where the hose attaches to the sink waste. Our technicians can isolate the exact failure point and carry out the repair onsite.
Not Cleaning Dishes Properly
Dirty dishes after a full wash cycle can result from several issues. The spray arms — the rotating arms that jet water across the dishes — have small holes that can clog with mineral deposits, especially in areas with harder water. Remove each spray arm and clear the holes with a toothpick or fine wire. Check that the spray arms spin freely; if they’re catching on tall items in the racks or if a worn bushing is preventing them from rotating, water distribution suffers.
The wash pump motor is another possibility. If it’s weakening with age, water pressure at the spray arms drops, and cleaning performance declines. You might notice that the dishwasher sounds quieter than it used to during the wash phase — less water pressure means less noise. A faulty inlet valve that restricts water flow into the machine can produce similar symptoms.
Leaking Water
Dishwasher leaks demand prompt attention to avoid water damage to flooring and cabinetry. Whirlpool dishwashers can leak from the door seal (which perishes and loses its compression over time), the inlet valve connection (where the water supply hose connects at the back), the drain hose (cracked or loose connections), or the wash pump seal. Our technicians identify the leak source by running the machine through controlled fill, wash, and drain cycles while inspecting each potential failure point.
Won’t Start or No Power
If pressing the start button does nothing — no lights, no sounds, no response — check the power supply first. Whirlpool dishwashers are typically hardwired to a switch under the kitchen bench; make sure that switch is on. If power is present but the machine is unresponsive, the door latch switch may have failed. Dishwashers won’t operate unless the door latch signals to the control board that the door is securely closed. A worn or broken latch is a common and inexpensive repair.
If the display lights up but the dishwasher won’t progress through a cycle, the control board or the cycle selector may have a fault. Power surges are a frequent cause of control board failures — if your dishwasher stopped working properly after a storm or power outage, the board is a prime suspect.
Making Unusual Noises
A normally quiet dishwasher that starts grinding, humming loudly, or making a high-pitched whine is telling you something is wearing out. A grinding noise often comes from the wash pump motor bearings — as they deteriorate, the motor works harder and makes more noise. A loud humming can indicate the drain pump is struggling against a partial blockage. Rattling or clattering during the wash cycle usually means the spray arm is hitting a dish or a utensil has fallen from the rack.
Detergent Not Dissolving
If you open the dishwasher after a cycle and find the detergent tablet sitting in the dispenser undissolved, the dispenser door mechanism may be faulty. The dispenser is spring-loaded and opens at a specific point in the cycle, triggered by the control board. If the spring breaks, the latch sticks, or the bi-metal release mechanism has failed, the door stays shut and detergent never reaches the wash water. The dispenser assembly is a replaceable unit.
Whirlpool Models We Service
We repair all Whirlpool dishwasher models sold in the Australian market, including the ADP series, the W Collection, and older 6th Sense models. Whirlpool also owns a number of sub-brands, and some components are shared across their product lines. Our technicians are familiar with the full range and carry diagnostic tools that can read Whirlpool’s fault code systems.
Parts and Warranty
Our technicians carry a range of commonly used parts on every van, including drain pumps, door latches, inlet valves, and dispenser assemblies common to Whirlpool dishwashers. For model-specific components like control boards or wash pump assemblies, we source parts and return to fit — Return visits are $29 plus parts and labour. We’ll provide a fixed price quote before any work is carried out. All repairs carry a 12-month warranty on parts and labour.
Pricing and Booking
$219 includes a callout and up to 30 minutes labour onsite — most faults are diagnosed and many repaired in that time. Additional time is $45 per 15 minutes. Seniors, pensioners, and students receive a $20 discount.
