Dishwasher Not Filling With Water? Causes & Fixes for Brisbane Homes

Why Won’t Your Dishwasher Fill With Water?

You load the dishwasher, press start, hear the door lock engage — and then nothing. No rush of water, no wash action, just silence or a blinking error code. A dishwasher that will not fill with water is a common fault we see across Brisbane, and while it is frustrating, the cause is often something you can fix yourself in under 15 minutes.

Dishwashers require a reliable water supply and a properly functioning inlet valve to fill. Unlike washing machines that typically have two inlet connections (hot and cold), most modern dishwashers use a single cold water inlet and heat the water internally. This simpler plumbing means fewer things can go wrong on the supply side — but also means that any single blockage or failure stops fill completely.

Common Causes

Water supply tap closed. The most common cause — and the most embarrassing to discover after calling a technician. The dishwasher tap (usually located under the kitchen sink) may have been turned off during plumbing work, a sink repair, or accidentally knocked closed. Always check this first — it takes 10 seconds and resolves more fill faults than any other step.

Blocked inlet filter. A small mesh filter screen sits where the inlet hose connects to the dishwasher (or at the tap end of the hose). This filter traps sediment and debris from the water supply. Over time, particularly in Brisbane homes with older plumbing, these screens accumulate enough material to severely restrict water flow. After heavy rain or council mains flushing, sediment levels in Brisbane water increase significantly, accelerating filter clogging.

Kinked inlet hose. The inlet hose runs from the tap under the sink to the dishwasher. In the cramped space under many Brisbane kitchen sinks, this hose can become kinked when items are stored too close, when the dishwasher is pushed in after maintenance, or when other plumbing work displaces the hose from its original routing.

Faulty water inlet valve. The inlet valve is an electrically operated solenoid mounted inside the dishwasher (usually behind the kick plate at the bottom front). When the control board sends voltage, the valve opens to allow water in. If the solenoid coil fails or the valve diaphragm hardens, water cannot enter regardless of supply pressure.

Door not fully latched. Most dishwashers have a safety interlock that prevents the fill cycle from starting unless the door is fully closed and the latch switch is engaged. A misaligned door, worn latch, or food debris in the latch area can prevent full closure. Some models display a specific error code for this; others simply refuse to start without indication.

Flood protection triggered. Many modern dishwashers (particularly Bosch, Miele, and ASKO) have an anti-flood system — a float switch in the base pan that detects water where it should not be. If a minor leak has deposited water in the base, the float switch rises and the machine locks out the inlet valve as a flood prevention measure. This is a safety feature, not a malfunction, though resolving the underlying leak is essential.

Faulty float switch or water level sensor. The float switch or electronic water level sensor inside the tub tells the control board when the tub has enough water. If this sensor fails in the “full” position, the board believes the tub is already filled and never opens the inlet valve. You can sometimes hear the machine skip straight to the wash phase (pump running) without any fill occurring.

What You Can Check Yourself

  1. Check the water tap. Open the cabinet under the kitchen sink and locate the dishwasher supply tap. Turn it fully off, wait five seconds, then fully on again. If it is a quarter-turn tap, the lever should be parallel to the pipe when open.
  2. Inspect the inlet hose. While under the sink, check the inlet hose for kinks, tight bends, or visible damage. Straighten any kinks and confirm the hose has a smooth, unrestricted path from tap to dishwasher.
  3. Clean the inlet filter. Turn the tap off. Disconnect the inlet hose from the dishwasher end (have a towel ready). Look inside the connection port for a small mesh filter. Pull it out with pliers, rinse under running water, and refit. Also check the tap end of the hose for a second filter screen.
  4. Check the door latch. Open and firmly close the dishwasher door. Listen for a solid click. If the door does not latch cleanly, check for food debris, displaced racks, or items poking above the tub line that prevent full closure.
  5. Check for water in the base. If your dishwasher has a removable kick plate at the bottom, remove it and look underneath the machine with a torch. If you see standing water in the base pan, the flood switch has been triggered. Mop up the water, but investigate the source of the leak — it will recur without repair.
  6. Power cycle. Turn the dishwasher off at the wall for five minutes, then restart. This can clear temporary sensor glitches, particularly false flood-switch activations from condensation.

When to Call a Professional

If the water supply is confirmed good, the door latches properly, and the dishwasher still will not fill, the inlet valve, float switch, or control board is likely at fault. Call a technician if there is water in the base pan (indicating a leak that needs repair alongside the fill fault), if the machine attempts to wash without filling (water level sensor fault), or if you hear clicking but no water flow (inlet valve solenoid failure).

What the Repair Typically Involves

We check the water supply chain first (tap, hose, filter), then the door latch and flood switch. If the inlet valve has failed, we replace it — accessed via the kick plate on most models, this is a 20 to 30 minute repair. We also inspect for leaks if the flood switch was triggered, to prevent recurrence.

Our standard callout is $219, which includes the first 30 minutes of labour. Additional time is $45 per 15-minute block. Seniors, pensioners, and students receive a $20 discount. All parts carry a 12-month warranty. All prices are estimates only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my dishwasher fill with water?

Check the water tap under the sink first — it may be closed. Then inspect the inlet filter for blockages and the hose for kinks. If supply is good, the inlet valve, door latch, or flood switch may be at fault.

How do I know if my dishwasher inlet valve is faulty?

If supply is confirmed (tap open, filter clean, hose clear) and the machine still won’t fill, the valve has likely failed. You may hear a click when it tries to open but no water flows.

Why does my dishwasher only partially fill?

Usually a partially blocked inlet filter or low mains pressure. Clean the mesh filter screen — this resolves most partial fill issues.

How much does a dishwasher fill repair cost in Brisbane?

Our callout is $219 including the first 30 minutes of labour. Inlet valve parts cost $80 to $200. Many fill issues are resolved with no parts cost. Seniors, pensioners, and students receive a $20 discount. All prices are estimates only.
