Penalties for DIY electrical work

DIY electrical work is unlicensed electrical work, which is illegal, and has penalties of up to $40,000 for individuals.

A breach that exposes an individual to a risk of death or serious injury or illness can attract a maximum penalty of $600,000 for an individual ($3,000,000 for a corporation) or five years’ imprisonment.

Hiring an electrical contractor

In Queensland, all electricians must have an electrical work licence permitting them to carry out work. What’s more, the law requires that licensed electrical workers must ensure that they perform electrical work in accordance with legislation, codes of practice as well as technical standards.

As well as individual licences for electrical work, electrical contracting businesses must also have an electrical contractor licence. In addition, electrical contractors must have a minimum of $5 million public liability insurance, with a $50,000 consumer protection component.

What to look for

Always look for the electrician’s electrical contractor licence number and confirm that they have a current licence before getting them to do any work for you.
