Fridge Regas Cost — What You’ll Actually Pay in Brisbane

A fridge regas in Brisbane typically costs $800–$1,500 including leak detection, leak repair, and refrigerant recharge. The exact price depends on the type of leak, the refrigerant your fridge uses, and how long the repair takes.

But here’s what most people don’t realise — if your fridge has lost gas, it has a leak. And regassing without fixing the leak is both illegal in Australia and a waste of your money. Let us explain.

What Does Fridge Regassing Actually Involve?

A proper regas isn’t just “topping up gas.” It’s a structured repair process:

  1. Leak detection — Finding exactly where the refrigerant is escaping
  2. Leak repair — Sealing or replacing the damaged section (usually a copper line or joint)
  3. Pressure testing — Running a nitrogen test to verify the repair holds
  4. System evacuation — Using a vacuum to remove all air and moisture from the lines
  5. Recharging — Adding fresh refrigerant to the manufacturer’s specifications
  6. Performance testing — Running the fridge and confirming it cools properly

If a technician offers to “just top up the gas” without finding the leak, they’re cutting corners. That’s also illegal in Australia under refrigerant handling laws. Proper work takes time, but it actually fixes the problem.

Cost Breakdown

Here’s what you’re paying for:

  • Call-out and diagnosis: Covered by our standard call-out fee (first 30 minutes). We identify whether it’s a gas leak, a thermostat fault, a blocked drain, or a worn door seal.
  • Leak repair + regas: $800–$1,500 depending on where the leak is and how complex the fix is
  • If compressor replacement is needed: $1,000–$1,500+ (this significantly changes whether repairing makes sense)

We’ll tell you the cost before we start. If it’s not worth repairing, we’ll say so — we’re not going to charge you $1,000 to fix a fridge that’s only worth $400.

Why Fridges Lose Gas (They Don’t Just “Run Out”)

Fridges are sealed systems. The refrigerant doesn’t deplete like fuel in a car — it cycles through the system over and over. If the gas level is low, there’s a leak somewhere.

Common leak causes:

  • Corroded copper lines — Brisbane’s humidity accelerates corrosion, especially in older units
  • Vibration damage — Years of compressor vibration can wear pinhole leaks into tubes
  • Physical damage — Moving house, aggressive cleaning, or accidental bumps can rupture lines
  • Manufacturing defects — Occasionally a joint or connection fails prematurely

None of these are user error. They’re just part of owning a fridge long enough.

Signs Your Fridge Might Need Regassing

  • Fridge runs constantly but doesn’t get cold (or takes hours)
  • Freezer section works fine, but the fridge compartment stays warm
  • Unusual frost patterns on the back wall (especially thick buildup on one side)
  • Food spoils faster than normal
  • Your electricity bill jumps noticeably (compressor working overtime)

Important caveat: These symptoms can also mean a faulty thermostat, a blocked drain, a worn door seal, or a broken fan motor — all cheaper to fix than a regas. That’s why proper diagnosis matters before assuming it’s a gas issue.

When Is Regassing Worth It vs Buying a New Fridge?

Use the 50% rule: if the repair costs more than 50% of what a new equivalent fridge costs, consider replacing instead.

Age guide:

  • Under 8 years: Almost always worth repairing. You’ve got a good lifespan left.
  • 8–12 years: Worth it if the repair is straightforward (simple leak, no compressor issues).
  • Over 12 years: Think carefully. Older fridges use significantly more electricity than new models, and a second repair may follow. That money might be better spent toward a replacement.

We’ll always give you an honest assessment. If your fridge is 15 years old and needs a $350 regas, we’ll tell you that money might be better spent toward a new unit that’s more efficient and comes with a warranty.

Australian Regulations — Why This Isn’t a DIY Job

Refrigerant handling in Australia is strictly regulated for good reason:

  • All technicians handling refrigerant must hold an ARCTick Refrigerant Handling Licence. We do. It means we’ve trained on safety, environmental responsibility, and proper procedures.
  • Regassing without repairing the leak first is illegal under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act. Releasing refrigerant into the atmosphere harms the ozone layer and is taken seriously.
  • Modern fridges use R600a (isobutane) — a flammable gas that requires licensed, careful handling. One spark in the wrong place, and you’ve got a problem.
  • Older fridges may use R134a — which has higher environmental impact and is being phased down globally.
  • Penalties for unlicensed handling are serious — fines, prosecution, and liability if something goes wrong.

If someone offers to regas your fridge for $300 cash, ask to see their ARCTick licence. If they can’t show one, walk away. You’re not just risking a poor repair — you’re supporting illegal work.
