LG Washing Machine Showing PE? Here’s the Cause
If your LG washing machine displays PE and refuses to start a cycle, the machine has detected a problem with its water-level sensing system. PE — Pressure Error — appears when the control board cannot get a valid reading from the pressure switch that monitors how much water is in the tub.
Without that reading, the machine can’t safely manage filling, washing, or draining. Book a Brisbane LG washing machine repair or call (07) 3062 2377.
What PE Means
LG washing machines (front-loaders and most modern top-loaders) use a small air-pressure switch to monitor tub water level. A thin plastic tube runs from the bottom of the tub to the switch — as water rises, air pressure in the tube rises, the switch contacts close at calibrated thresholds, and the control board knows when to stop filling. PE fires when this chain is broken.
Common Causes
Pressure tube disconnected. The thin air tube between the tub and the pressure switch can pull loose during a particularly heavy spin cycle. The switch reads no pressure regardless of water level.
Pressure tube blocked. Detergent residue, scum, or lint can clog the tube over time. The switch reads delayed or wrong pressure values.
Pressure switch failure. The switch itself can develop sticky contacts or fail entirely. The switch is mechanical and wears with cycle count.
Wiring fault. The wiring harness between the pressure switch and the control board can develop a fault — often where it passes over the cabinet edge and gets nipped during installation or service.
Control board fault. Less common but happens after power surges. The pressure-reading input on the board fails to interpret a healthy signal.
Water supply issue. If the inlet hose is closed, kinked, or has very low pressure, the machine fills too slowly. The pressure switch never sees the expected rise within the timeout, and the board interprets it as a pressure-system failure.
DIY Steps
1. Power cycle. Switch the washer off at the wall for 60 seconds, then turn it back on and start a Rinse Only cycle. A momentary glitch sometimes clears.
2. Check the water supply. Confirm the tap behind the machine is fully open. Run a hose check at the back to confirm strong flow.
3. Check the inlet hose. Look for kinks or sharp bends. Smooth out if found.
4. Inspect the pressure tube. Pull the machine forward and look at the rear. The pressure switch is typically at the upper rear. The thin clear or grey air tube runs from there down to the tub. If you can see it disconnected, push it firmly back on. If you can detach it cleanly, blow through it to clear any residue.
5. Restart and test. Restore power, run a Rinse Only cycle. If PE clears, the pressure tube was the issue. If PE returns, the switch or board is at fault.
When to Call a Technician
Book a repair if PE persists after the steps above, if the machine doesn’t fill at all when you start a cycle, if you can hear the inlet valve clicking repeatedly without water entering, or if PE alternates with other error codes intermittently — usually a sign of control board degradation.
How Always Prompt Repairs Can Help
We are an independent Brisbane appliance repair business — not an authorised LG service agent. We service LG washing machines across Greater Brisbane, Ipswich and the Northern Gold Coast. Our technicians carry common LG parts including pressure switches, inlet valves, and control boards.
If your LG is inside the manufacturer warranty period, contact LG Australia first. For out-of-warranty repairs see LG service centre Brisbane, washing machine repairs Brisbane, or related: LG UE (unbalanced load), LG LE, other LG fault codes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does PE mean on an LG washing machine?
PE stands for Pressure Error. The control board cannot get a valid reading from the water-level pressure switch. Causes include a disconnected or clogged pressure tube, a faulty pressure switch, or a control board fault.
How do I reset the PE error?
Power cycle the machine off at the wall for 60 seconds, then restart. If PE returns within minutes, the fault is permanent and needs diagnosis. The reset alone does not fix the underlying cause.
Will the LG washer run with PE active?
No — PE halts the cycle because the machine cannot safely manage water levels without a valid pressure reading. Continuing risks overfilling or running dry.
How is PE different from UE on an LG washer?
PE is a pressure-sensor fault — the machine can’t read water level correctly. UE is an unbalanced-load fault — the machine can read levels fine but the drum is bunching during spin. Different root causes, different fixes. See our LG UE error guide.
How much does it cost to fix the LG PE error in Brisbane?
Our callout fee is $219, which includes the first 30 minutes of on-site labour and full diagnosis. Additional time is $45 per 15 minutes. Parts are quoted separately. Seniors, pensioners and students receive a $20 discount. All prices are estimates only.
