Samsung UE Error Code on Washing Machines — Causes & Fixes

What Does the UE Error Mean on a Samsung Washing Machine?

The Samsung UE error code stands for “Unbalanced Error” — the washing machine has detected that the laundry load inside the drum is unevenly distributed and cannot safely proceed with the spin cycle. During the spin-up phase, the control board monitors vibration sensors attached to the drum assembly. If the vibration exceeds the safe threshold — indicating that heavy items have clumped to one side of the drum — the machine stops the spin to prevent damage to the bearings, suspension, and potentially the floor beneath the machine.

UE is the most common Samsung washing machine error code we see in Brisbane. It appears across the full Samsung front-loader range — the WW series (WW75T4540, WW85T4540, WW95T4540), the WF AddWash series, and older models. Samsung top-loaders display the same code. Unlike many error codes that indicate a component failure, UE is often caused by how the laundry was loaded rather than a fault with the machine itself — which means many UE occurrences can be resolved without a technician.

That said, recurring UE errors on a machine that previously spun fine are a different story. If UE appears frequently regardless of how carefully you load the machine, worn shock absorbers, broken suspension springs, or deteriorated drum bearings are likely causes that need professional attention.

Common Causes of the Samsung UE Error

Unevenly distributed laundry. The single most common cause. Heavy items like bath towels, jeans, and bedding tend to clump together on one side of the drum during the wash cycle, creating an off-centre mass that becomes dangerously unstable at high spin speeds. This is especially common when washing a mix of heavy and lightweight items — the heavy pieces sink to the bottom and one side while lighter items shift to the opposite side.

Washing a single heavy item. A single doona, blanket, or large towel has no counterweight on the other side of the drum. The machine cannot balance a single heavy mass regardless of its position. Always add additional items (towels work well) to provide counterbalance when washing large, heavy items individually.

Overloading. Stuffing the drum beyond its rated capacity compresses the laundry so tightly that it cannot redistribute during the spin-up phase. The compacted mass shifts as a single heavy block rather than spreading evenly around the drum. As a guide, you should be able to comfortably fit your hand between the top of the load and the drum — if you cannot, the machine is overloaded.

Machine not level. A washing machine must be perfectly level for the vibration sensors and suspension system to function correctly. If the machine rocks, tilts, or has a foot not making solid contact with the floor, even a well-balanced load can trigger UE. This is common in Brisbane homes with older timber floors that have developed slight undulations, or on tiled laundry floors where grout lines create an uneven surface under the feet.

Transit bolts not removed. On newly installed machines, the transit bolts at the rear of the cabinet lock the inner drum to the outer tub for safe transport. If these bolts are not removed before use, the drum cannot float on its suspension springs and shock absorbers, causing extreme vibration during spin and immediate UE errors. This is a surprisingly common issue — particularly when homeowners install the machine themselves without reading the installation guide.

Worn shock absorbers. The drum is suspended on two or four shock absorbers (depending on the model) that dampen vibration during the spin cycle. Over years of use, these shock absorbers lose their damping ability — the fluid inside leaks or the piston wears. When the shocks are worn, even a well-balanced load generates enough vibration to trigger UE because the suspension cannot absorb the movement. A telltale sign is the machine walking across the floor or banging against the wall during spin, even with small loads.

Broken suspension springs. The drum also hangs from springs at the top of the cabinet (on front-loaders) or sits on springs at the base (on top-loaders). If a spring breaks or detaches, the drum sits unevenly inside the cabinet and triggers UE consistently. You may hear a metallic clunking when the drum moves if a broken spring is contacting the cabinet.

Worn drum bearings. The drum bearings allow the inner drum to spin smoothly inside the outer tub. When bearings wear out, the drum develops excessive play — it wobbles rather than spinning on a true axis. This wobble triggers the vibration sensors and causes UE. Worn bearings also produce a loud rumbling or grinding noise during spin that gets progressively louder over weeks and months.

DIY Troubleshooting Steps

Try these steps before calling a technician. Most UE errors are resolved by steps 1 through 3.

  1. Redistribute the load. Open the door and rearrange the laundry so heavy items are evenly spread around the drum. If you are washing a doona or blanket, add three or four bath towels to provide counterbalance. Close the door and restart the spin cycle.
  2. Check the load size. If the drum was stuffed full, remove some items and run two smaller loads instead. If the drum had only one or two items, add more to give the machine enough mass to distribute evenly.
  3. Level the machine. Place a spirit level on top of the machine, checking both left-to-right and front-to-back. Adjust the levelling feet by turning them clockwise (to lower) or anticlockwise (to raise). Lock each foot in position with the lock nut. Confirm the machine does not rock when you push on each corner.
  4. Check transit bolts (new machines). If the machine was recently installed, check the rear panel for transit bolts — usually three or four large bolts with plastic spacers. If they are still in place, remove them with a spanner and keep them in case you move the machine in the future. Fit the supplied plastic covers over the bolt holes.
  5. Listen for unusual noises. Run a spin cycle with a small, balanced load. If you hear loud rumbling, grinding, or metallic clunking, the issue is likely worn bearings, shocks, or a broken spring — all of which need professional repair.

When to Call a Professional

If UE appears consistently regardless of load size and distribution on a level machine, the suspension or bearings are the likely cause. Call a technician if the machine vibrates excessively even with small loads, if you hear grinding or rumbling during spin, if the drum visibly wobbles when you push it by hand (with the machine off), or if the machine has started walking across the floor during cycles.

What the Repair Typically Involves

When we attend a Samsung UE fault, we first verify the machine is level and the load is appropriate. We then inspect the shock absorbers, suspension springs, and drum bearings. Shock absorber replacement is the most common repair — we carry these for popular Samsung models. Bearing replacement is more involved (2 to 3 hours) and is usually only cost-effective on machines under 8 years old.

Our standard callout is $219, which includes the first 30 minutes of labour. Additional time is $45 per 15-minute block. Seniors, pensioners, and students receive a $20 discount. All parts carry a 12-month warranty. All prices are estimates only.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does UE mean on a Samsung washing machine?

UE stands for Unbalanced Error. The machine detected an uneven weight distribution in the drum during spin. It stops to prevent vibration damage. Redistributing the laundry evenly and ensuring the machine is level resolves most UE occurrences.

Is UE different from UB on Samsung washers?

Yes. UB is a temporary warning — the machine has detected an imbalance and is attempting to self-correct by adding water and slowly tumbling. If self-correction works, the cycle continues. UE means self-correction failed and the cycle has stopped. UB is normal; recurring UE may indicate a mechanical issue.

How much does it cost to fix a Samsung UE error?

Most UE errors cost nothing to fix — just redistribute the load or level the machine. If the cause is worn shock absorbers or suspension springs, our callout is $219 including the first 30 minutes of labour. Seniors, pensioners, and students receive a $20 discount. All prices are estimates only.

Can a Samsung washing machine fix UE by itself?

Samsung washers attempt self-correction — pausing, adding water, and slowly tumbling to redistribute the load. If this works, the cycle resumes (you may briefly see UB during this process). If it cannot balance the load after multiple attempts, it stops and displays UE for you to manually intervene.
