Westinghouse Dishwasher Showing F5? It’s a Drain Fault
If your Westinghouse dishwasher has stopped mid-cycle with F5 on the display and there’s standing water at the base of the tub, you’re looking at a drainage fault. F5 is Westinghouse’s fault code for the drain cycle taking longer than expected — usually because of a blockage between the wash chamber and the standpipe.
The vast majority of F5 errors are fixable in 15 minutes with a filter clean. When that doesn’t resolve it, the cause is internal to the pump or control board and needs a technician. Book a Brisbane Westinghouse dishwasher repair or call (07) 3062 2377.
What F5 Means
Westinghouse dishwashers across the WSF, SB, and ESF series time the drain cycle. The drain pump runs, the pressure switch monitors water level, and the control board expects the chamber to empty within a set window. If water is still detected after the timeout, the cycle halts with F5.
Like the related Westinghouse F2 (water inlet fault), F5 is a protection code — the dishwasher has stopped before continued operation could damage the pump or overflow into your kitchen.
Common Causes
Drain filter blockage. By far the most common. The filter at the base of the wash tub catches food scraps, glass, labels, and grease. When clogged, water flow drops below the level needed to drain within the timeout.
Drain hose kink or blockage. The hose can be pinched behind the cabinet during installation or after the dishwasher has been pulled out. Sediment buildup inside the hose is a slower-developing cause.
Foreign object in the pump. Glass shards or cherry pits can pass the filter and jam the impeller. The pump tries to run but doesn’t move water.
Failed drain pump motor. The pump motor itself burns out or seizes. No drain pump sound during the expected drain phase confirms this.
Sink standpipe blockage. If your dishwasher drain connects to a slow-draining kitchen sink standpipe, F5 can fire repeatedly even though the dishwasher itself is healthy. Test your sink drain separately.
Pressure switch fault. A switch reporting water present when the chamber is dry will trigger F5. Less common but does happen on older units.
DIY Steps to Clear F5
1. Switch the dishwasher off at the wall and turn off the water supply tap.
2. Open the door and remove the bottom rack. The filter sits at the base of the wash chamber — unscrew anti-clockwise.
3. Rinse the filter thoroughly under running water. Use an old toothbrush on the mesh if grease has built up. Check the sump area beneath the filter for visible debris and clear any you can reach.
4. Pull the dishwasher forward enough to inspect the drain hose at the rear. Straighten any sharp bends. If the hose looks crushed, replace before continuing.
5. Run the kitchen tap and confirm the sink drains promptly. A slow sink drain will cause F5 even with a clean dishwasher filter.
6. Refit the filter, restore power, and run a Rinse Only cycle. If the cycle completes, you’re done. If F5 returns, escalate.
When to Call a Technician
Book a repair if F5 persists after filter cleaning and hose check, if you hear no pump activity during the drain phase, if the dishwasher fills but won’t drain at all, or if F5 is intermittent. Intermittent F5 often signals an early-stage pump failure that progresses to permanent over a few weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does F5 mean on a Westinghouse dishwasher?
F5 is the Westinghouse drainage fault code. The dishwasher attempted to drain wash water but did not complete within the expected time. Common causes include a blocked filter, kinked drain hose, or failed drain pump.
Can I keep using the dishwasher with F5?
No. F5 halts the wash cycle and the dishwasher will not run again until the drainage problem is resolved. Forcing repeated attempts risks damaging the pump.
Does cleaning the filter usually fix F5?
Yes — a blocked filter is the most common cause of F5 across Westinghouse WSF, SB, and ESF series dishwashers. Cleaning resolves around half of F5 callouts.
Is F5 the same on all Westinghouse dishwasher models?
F5 is consistent across most current Westinghouse dishwasher models as a drainage fault. Older models may use different codes (E5, F4) for similar faults — the diagnostic process is the same.
How much does it cost to fix an F5 error in Brisbane?
Our callout fee is $219, which includes the first 30 minutes of on-site labour and full diagnosis. Additional time is $45 per 15 minutes. Parts are quoted separately. Seniors, pensioners and students receive a $20 discount. All prices are estimates only.
