Bosch Dishwasher E18 Error — What It Means and How to Fix It

Bosch dishwasher showing E18? Here’s what’s happening.

Your Bosch dishwasher has stopped mid-cycle and the display is showing E18. According to the BSH service manual (Fault Codes PM I, doc 5600 0000157007), E18 is a filling fault — the appliance has detected that the water supply rate is too low or there is no water supply reaching the machine. The programme stops and the machine drains automatically.

The good news: in most cases, E18 is caused by something straightforward — a closed tap, a kinked inlet hose, or a blocked inlet filter. These are all things you can check yourself before calling a technician.

If you’d rather have an authorised Bosch technician handle it from start to finish, book online or call (07) 3062 2377. We’re an authorised Bosch service agent serving Brisbane, Ipswich and the Northern Gold Coast. Our technicians carry a range of commonly used parts on every van, so most repairs are completed in a single visit.

What does E18 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?

The BSH Fault Codes PM I manual (document 5600 0000157007) defines E:18 as a filling fault. The internal diagnostic check identifies that the water supply rate is too low according to the flow sensor, or that there is no water supply at all. When this is detected, the appliance waits for water supply and the programme stops with draining.

E18 is not a damaged-machine code. It’s a protection code — the dishwasher has detected a water supply problem and paused to prevent running a wash cycle without adequate water.

Important: This definition is verified from the BSH PM I series dishwasher documentation. Error codes can vary in meaning between Bosch model ranges and appliance types. Always check your specific model’s user manual if you’re unsure which fault the code refers to on your machine.

Common causes of the Bosch E18 error

In rough order of likelihood:

  1. Water tap not turned on (or not fully open). The most common cause — and the easiest to fix. The dishwasher’s inlet valve needs adequate water pressure to fill properly. If the tap has been bumped or turned off for plumbing work, E18 will appear.
  2. Kinked inlet hose. The braided inlet hose connecting the tap to the back of the dishwasher can get pinched when the machine is pushed back against the wall, especially after cleaning behind it.
  3. Blocked inlet filter (strainer). There’s a small mesh filter where the inlet hose connects to the dishwasher. Over time, sediment, scale, and debris from the water supply can clog it, reducing flow below the threshold the flow sensor expects.
  4. Faulty water inlet valve. The solenoid valve that opens to let water into the dishwasher can fail — either electrically (won’t open) or mechanically (partially blocked). You’ll often notice the valve doesn’t click when a cycle starts.
  5. Flow sensor wiring issue. The flow sensor tells the control board how much water is entering the machine. Loose connectors or damaged wiring between the sensor and the control board can cause false E18 readings.
  6. Low household water pressure. If other taps in the house are also running slow, the issue may be upstream — a partially closed main stopcock, a burst water main in the street, or your water authority doing maintenance.
  7. Control board (ECU) fault. Rare, but possible — usually after a power surge or moisture ingress. The board misreads the flow sensor signal.

Causes 1–3 you can often resolve yourself. Cause 4 onwards typically needs a technician.

How to clear E18 yourself (safe steps)

Before calling a technician, work through these checks. They take about 10 minutes and don’t require any tools.

  1. Check the water tap. Find the tap that supplies your dishwasher (usually under the kitchen sink). Make sure it’s fully open. If it was off, turn it on and run a test cycle.
  2. Inspect the inlet hose. Pull the dishwasher out enough to see the hose at the back. Check for kinks, sharp bends, or anything pressing on it. Straighten any kinks and ensure the hose has a smooth run from the tap to the machine.
  3. Clean the inlet filter. Turn off the water tap. Unscrew the inlet hose from the back of the dishwasher (have a towel ready — a small amount of water will come out). You’ll see a small mesh filter in the inlet. Remove it carefully, rinse it under the tap to clear any sediment or scale, and refit it.
  4. Check household water pressure. Turn on the kitchen tap fully. If the flow is noticeably weak, the problem may not be with the dishwasher — check whether your main stopcock is fully open, or whether your water authority has reported supply issues in your area.
  5. Reset and test. Turn the dishwasher off at the wall for 30 seconds, then turn it back on. Run a short wash cycle. If it completes without E18, you’ve found and fixed the problem.

If E18 returns, the cause is likely the inlet valve, flow sensor, or wiring — move on to the next section.

When to call an authorised Bosch service agent

It’s time to call a technician when:

  • You’ve checked the tap, hose, and inlet filter and the error returns within one cycle.
  • The inlet valve doesn’t click when a cycle starts (listen at the bottom-front of the machine) — suggests a failed solenoid.
  • E18 appears intermittently — sometimes the cycle fills fine, sometimes it doesn’t — which often points to a wiring fault or a partially failing valve.
  • You’ve confirmed household water pressure is normal but the dishwasher still won’t fill.
  • E18 appears immediately after the cycle starts, before any water has entered the machine.

Replacing the inlet valve or diagnosing flow sensor wiring requires pulling the dishwasher out, removing access panels, and working with electrical connections. Genuine Bosch parts are required to maintain the warranty if your machine is within Bosch’s manufacturer warranty period.

How Always Prompt Repairs fixes E18

We’re an authorised Bosch service agent for in-warranty and out-of-warranty work across Brisbane, Ipswich and the Northern Gold Coast.

If your dishwasher is in warranty: For Bosch warranty repairs, customers need to log a warranty job with BSH (Bosch) first. BSH will assess the claim and arrange service. As an authorised Bosch service agent, we carry out warranty work on BSH’s behalf — at no cost to you.

If your dishwasher is out of warranty: Our standard $219 diagnostic call-out covers the first 30 minutes on site, including diagnosis. Additional labour is $45 per 15 minutes thereafter. The technician confirms the cause, gives you a clear total price for the repair, and you approve before any work starts. We offer a $20 discount for seniors, pensioners and students. All prices are estimates only.

Return visits are $29 plus parts and labour. We’ll provide a fixed price quote before any work is carried out.

Our technicians carry a range of commonly used parts on every van — including Bosch inlet valves, filters, and flow sensors — so most E18 repairs are completed in a single visit. If your model needs a specific part we don’t stock, you’ll have an exact timeline before we leave.

If your dishwasher isn’t worth repairing — older models with multiple faults, for example — we’ll tell you that, even if it means we don’t get the job. We’d rather you spend the repair budget on a replacement than on a temporary fix.

All our repairs carry a 12-month parts and labour warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reset my Bosch dishwasher E18 error?

You can clear the display by turning the dishwasher off at the wall for 30 seconds and turning it back on, but unless the water supply problem is resolved, E18 will return within one cycle. The reset doesn’t fix the underlying fault.

Is the E18 error covered under Bosch warranty?

If your dishwasher is within Bosch’s manufacturer warranty period (typically 24 months from the date of purchase), the repair may be covered at no cost. For Bosch warranty repairs, customers need to log a warranty job with BSH (Bosch) first. BSH will assess the claim and arrange service. You’ll need to have your proof of purchase available.

How much does it cost to repair a Bosch E18 error out of warranty?

It depends on the diagnosis. Our standard call-out is $219, which includes the first 30 minutes on site. If the cause is a closed tap or blocked filter resolved during the diagnostic, there may be no additional repair cost. If the inlet valve needs replacing, you’ll have an upfront total price after diagnosis — and you approve before any work starts. Return visits are $29 plus parts and labour. All prices are estimates only.

How long does a Bosch E18 repair take?

Most E18 repairs are completed in a single visit because our technicians carry a range of commonly used Bosch parts on every van. If your model needs a specific part we don’t stock, we order it directly from Bosch and book a return visit — typically within the same week.

Will checking the inlet filter fix E18?

Often, yes — a blocked inlet filter is one of the most common causes of E18. Sediment and scale build up over time and restrict water flow below the threshold the flow sensor expects. If you’ve cleaned the filter and the error returns, the cause is likely the inlet valve or flow sensor wiring and needs a technician.

Does the Bosch E18 error mean the dishwasher is broken?

No — E18 is a protection code, not a damage code. The dishwasher has detected a water supply problem and stopped before running a cycle without adequate water. The underlying cause is usually a supply issue (closed tap, kinked hose, blocked filter), which is fixable.
