Samsung SE Error Code — Dishwasher Drain Fix Brisbane

The Samsung SE error code (also displayed as “5E” on some models) on your dishwasher means the machine has detected a drainage fault. Water is not draining from the wash chamber as expected, causing the cycle to stop. This is one of the most common Samsung dishwasher faults we see across Brisbane — and while a simple filter clean sometimes resolves it, persistent SE errors usually indicate a pump or hose problem that needs professional repair.

What Does the Samsung SE Error Mean?

The SE code indicates the dishwasher’s drain system is unable to pump water out of the sump (the low point inside the machine where water collects) within the expected timeframe. Samsung dishwashers attempt to drain at multiple points during a wash cycle — after the pre-wash, after the main wash, and during the final rinse. The error can trigger during any of these phases.

Note: On some Samsung dishwasher displays, the “5E” and “SE” codes look very similar — they are the same error. Do not confuse this with the “E5” error, which relates to a heating fault on certain models.

This error appears across Samsung’s dishwasher range including the DW60M6055FG, DW60R7040BB, DW60M9960BB WaterWall, DW80R9950UG, and the DW60CG530F series.

Common Causes of the Samsung SE/5E Error

1. Blocked Drain Filter and Fine Mesh Screen

Samsung dishwashers have a multi-part filter assembly at the bottom of the wash chamber. The coarse filter catches large food particles, while the fine mesh screen traps smaller debris. When these are clogged with grease, food residue, and limescale — which builds up quickly in Brisbane’s water — water cannot flow freely into the drain pump. This is the most common cause and the first thing to check.

2. Blocked or Kinked Drain Hose

The drain hose connects the dishwasher’s pump outlet to your kitchen sink drain or garbage disposal. If this hose is kinked behind or under the dishwasher, or blocked internally with grease buildup, water cannot exit the machine. We frequently find drain hoses kinked during kitchen renovations or when dishwashers are pushed back into their cavity too forcefully.

3. Failed Drain Pump

The drain pump uses a small impeller to push water out through the drain hose. Over time, the pump motor can burn out or the impeller can crack. Foreign objects — glass shards, olive pits, toothpicks — can also jam the impeller and stall the motor. If you hear the pump humming but water is not draining, the impeller is likely jammed or broken. Complete silence during the drain phase indicates motor failure.

4. Blocked Sink Drain or Air Gap

If your dishwasher drains into the kitchen sink plumbing, a blocked sink drain or incorrectly installed air gap can prevent water from flowing out. This is an often-overlooked cause — the dishwasher itself may be working perfectly, but it has nowhere to push the water.

5. Sump Blockage

Food debris, broken glass, or hard water deposits can accumulate in the sump area beneath the filter assembly. Even with clean filters, buildup in the sump restricts water flow to the pump inlet. This requires removing the filter assembly and manually cleaning the sump cavity.

Troubleshooting Steps You Can Try

Clean the drain filter: Remove the bottom rack. Twist the cylindrical filter counter-clockwise and lift it out. Remove the fine mesh screen beneath it. Wash both pieces under running water with a soft brush, paying particular attention to grease buildup. Clear any debris from the sump cavity while the filters are out.

Inspect the drain hose: Pull the dishwasher out carefully (after turning off the water supply and disconnecting the power). Check the drain hose for kinks along its entire length. If possible, disconnect the hose at the sink end and check for internal blockages.

Check your sink drain: Run water in the kitchen sink. If the sink drains slowly, the shared drainage is the issue — clear the sink drain first, then retry the dishwasher.

Run a rinse cycle: After cleaning the filters, run a quick rinse cycle (no dishes, no detergent) to test whether drainage has improved. Watch and listen for the drain pump activating.

Power reset: Turn the dishwasher off at the wall for two minutes, then power it back on and start a new cycle. This clears temporary error states in the control board.

When Professional Repair is Needed

If cleaning the filters and checking the drain hose do not resolve the SE error, the problem is typically a failed drain pump, a sump blockage that requires disassembly to access, or a wiring fault between the pump and control board. Drain pump replacement on Samsung dishwashers involves removing the machine from the cavity, accessing the underside, and swapping the pump unit — this needs to be done by a qualified technician.
