Samsung Washing Machine Showing 4C? Water Supply Fault
If your Samsung washing machine has stopped before the cycle could really start and the display reads 4C, the machine is telling you it cannot get enough water. 4C is Samsung’s water supply fault code — the inlet valve opened, but the expected volume of water did not enter the drum within the timeout window.
About half the time, 4C is caused by something simple: a tap that is not fully open, a kinked inlet hose, or a blocked filter screen. Those are user-fixable in about 10 minutes. When that does not resolve it, the inlet valve solenoid or control board is the next suspect. Book a Brisbane Samsung washing machine repair or call (07) 3062 2377.
What 4C Means
Samsung washing machines (and most modern washing machines generally) measure incoming water either by time or by flow meter. 4C fires when the machine starts to fill, opens the inlet valve, but does not see the expected pressure rise or flow within the allowed window.
4C and 4E are the same fault across Samsung washer generations. Newer Eco Bubble and AddWash models show 4C; older WF and WA series showed 4E. Diagnostic steps are identical.
Common Causes
Tap closed or partially closed. The most common cause. Often the tap behind the washing machine has been bumped during cleaning, or it was never turned fully open after installation.
Kinked inlet hose. The hose can be pinched behind the machine if it has been pushed too far against the wall. The flow is restricted enough to time out.
Blocked inlet filter screen. Samsung machines have a small mesh filter screen where the inlet hose connects to the machine. Mineral deposits and pipe debris from the water mains build up in this screen, gradually choking flow.
Low household water pressure. Under 50 kPa (about half a normal mains pressure), the machine cannot fill fast enough. This is a problem with your house, not the machine.
Failed inlet valve solenoid. The electrically operated valve that opens to let water in fails. Either it does not open (no water enters) or it sticks partially closed (water enters too slowly).
Wiring fault to inlet valve. Less common but can happen — the wiring harness between the control board and inlet valve develops an open circuit.
Control board fault. Rare. Usually after a power surge.
DIY Steps to Clear 4C
1. Open the tap fully. Locate the tap behind the washing machine. Turn it anti-clockwise as far as it will go. Some isolation taps look open but only flow at a trickle if not turned all the way.
2. Check the inlet hose. Pull the machine forward enough to see the rear hose connections. The hose should run in a smooth curve. Straighten any kinks or pinches.
3. Test water pressure. Run the kitchen or laundry tap with a strong flow. If you have noticeably low pressure across your house, that needs addressing before the washer will run reliably.
4. Clean the filter screen. Turn off the tap. Disconnect the inlet hose at the machine end (have a towel ready — a few drops will come out). Pop the small mesh filter screen out with the tip of a flathead screwdriver. Rinse under running water. If mineral buildup is heavy, soak in vinegar for 10 minutes and rinse again. Reinstall the screen, reconnect the hose hand-tight plus a quarter turn.
5. Turn the water back on and check for leaks. Then restore power.
6. Run a Rinse Only cycle. If it fills and runs normally, 4C is resolved. If it returns, the cause is internal.
When to Call a Technician
Book a Brisbane Samsung washing machine repair if 4C persists after the tap, hose, and filter checks. Specific indicators that the fault is internal:
- No water entering the machine at all (no fill sound when you start a cycle)
- You can hear the inlet valve clicking repeatedly without water entering
- Water enters very slowly — fills, but times out before reaching the right level
- 4C alternates with other Samsung error codes intermittently

Frequently Asked Questions
What does 4C mean on a Samsung washing machine?
4C indicates a water supply fault. The washing machine could not fill with water in the expected time window. Causes include a closed tap, kinked inlet hose, blocked filter screen, low water pressure, or a failed inlet valve.
How is 4C different from 4E on a Samsung washer?
4C and 4E are essentially the same fault — water supply error — across different Samsung washing machine generations. Newer models display 4C; older models displayed 4E. Diagnostic steps are identical.
Can I keep using the washer with 4C showing?
No. The machine halts the cycle because it cannot proceed without water. Restart attempts will trigger 4C again until the water supply problem is resolved.
Will cleaning the inlet filter usually fix 4C?
Often yes — a blocked filter screen and a partially closed tap are the most common causes. Around half of 4C callouts are resolved at the tap, hose, or filter level before any technician work is needed.
How much does it cost to fix the Samsung 4C error in Brisbane?
Our callout fee is $219, which includes the first 30 minutes of on-site labour and full diagnosis. Additional time is $45 per 15 minutes. Parts are quoted separately. Seniors, pensioners and students receive a $20 discount.
